Need some help

Im new to the forum and I just picked up an 84 944..The car seems to be solid all around, but has a few annoying problems..If anyone can help with any of these,Id appreciate it.

1.The car runs very quiet when all electrical accessories are off,,but once a load is put on(headlights, fan, ect)the car emmits this horrible high squeal sound from under the hood..Could it be a bad belt?Tensioner?just out of adjustment?I dont know, buts its very embarassing..
2.The horn doesnt work. The previous owner installed a MOMO steering wheel..I removed the center emblem on the wheel and the wire is connected and making contact when the button is pressed..Maybe a bad fuse?relay?I do hear a slight beep---beep---beep coming from under the dash when the car is running..Maybe telling me something is wrong??Again,no idea..Again,thanks for any info you guys can provide..

Welcome to the Board!

Check your alternator belt , sounds like it's loose or worn out.
As far as the horn , check your fuses and horn relay first. Turn the car off, just put the key on the ignition position and try the horn see where the beeping sound is coming from, without the car running it will be easier.

NUMBER 1.
Sounds like you may have an adjustment issue, bad belt or components. more likely related to the alternator/compressor belt. the alternator and a/c compressor are tied together on the same belt. check the tension an the belt, should be pretty taunt, should not be able to twist ir over without alot of excess effort. (( another easy test is to add a little dialetric grease to a 1 inch area of the belt top and botton, if the noise goes away shortly after, its the belt. )) If it needs adjustment, it is adjusted by the tension rod from under the veh. tied the a.c compressor to a bracket on the block. loosen the jamb nuts and the bolts at eyelets and adjust.
If the noise is still there. turn off all loads and run engine, turn on a.c, If the noise starts with the a/c on and no other loads, may be replaced to a bad clutch and or compressor. I the noise it worse with the a/c off and the alternator loaded and the belt adjusted propperly, you may have a bad bearing in the alternator. check on both ends of the casing for fine metal shavings/dust.

NUMBER 2
Check fuse box under hood , diagram under lid. I you take the lead off the horn button and apply it to ground does the horn sound, if do you have a bad hoor switch or contact. I you pull the hor, in the left front fender in front of the left front wheel and apply a test light, does the light light up, if so bad horn.

..the chime noise under the hood is a warning chime, like leaving the key in or lights on. may have a bod contact internal to key switch.

I dont know if Im blind and dumb, but I do not see any fuse or relay panel under the hood. The only places I see a fuse block is under the drivers side dash.According to the owners manual, the car doesnt even have a horn fuse,it uses a relay under the dash labled IX(16AMP)Is this what I need to test??Remember guys, this is an 84...Thanks for the replys so far...

On my 83 the horn is a problem as well.

There is a copper "ring" between the wheel and the column that loses contact with the deterioration of the steering wheel bearing.
I have to lift up on the wheel for the horn to make this "contact"

I do not know if you momo kit came with this special kind of contact. It probably needs to be hardwired/soldered somehow in order to make it work.

Later models are hardwired I believe.

Welcome to the board!

Yeah, your fuse box is in the driver's footwell. In late cars it is under the hood.

On the late models, we still have the little copper slider for the horn. And it still wears out. Too bad =(
Should be able to use some kind of conductive grease to help it last longer though.

Check for power at the horns when you push the button. Or try shorting the wire in the center of the wheel to ground. Those are the easiest ways to start.

I have seen the horns corrode to the point where they become inoperable as well. Fairly common I think.

I checked the horns and they dont seem to have any corrosion on or around them.I also grounded the wire out to the column and still no horn..Im gonna pull the horn relay and have it tested. The beeping noise I was refering to above is coming from under the dash, not under the hood..Noise might be coming from the relay as relays often make noises when bad.Usually clicking or buzzing..I dont know..I'll have to play with it a little more. Thanks for the replys...

Just a thought...I had a similar squeal from my car last year...it was one of the fans which needed to be replaced.

Good luck, and welcome to the board....
