Rear end noise
Now that I've put on a better exhaust, I can hear more.
The rear end, maybe the passenger side is making a medium pitched whirling or rotary sound, with a very slight thump. It feels like the sounds are related. The shop said they didn't see or hear anything obviously wrong, but it's there. It has new tires and the emergency brake cables and shoes have been replaced. To me, it sounds more like bearings or cv joints. Any thoughts? Thanks, Paul 83 944 |

Hello phardin, I had those noises coming out of the rear end of my car the other day also. I brought her in for a front end allignment an the next day those sounds started happening, I checked it out an come to find out the dummies at the shop didn't think it was to important to tighten all the lugs nuts, only two out of five was good for them.
I tightened them up an drove the car to the shop an had a few words with the manager. Situation taken care off. So, hopefully (an not) you've got a dummie putting your rear wheels on an can now do the easy fix? If not canging that real axle isn't to hard.b |

I take my torq wrench with me to any tire changing. Set it at 95 pounds.
The rear wheel bearings on the early 944's are notorious for failing because of years of wear on the stub axle. The later models seem to have the CV's go out more than the one piece wheel bearing. Either way you need to jack the questionable wheel off of the ground, take the car out of gear and release the parking brake. Grab the wheel top and bottom and give it a good shake. If there is any looseness you first need to check that the large nut is tight. By tight Porsche means over 340 foot pounds. The early 944's have a cotter key. The later use a self locking nut that should be replace after each hub removal. I don't know what other cars your shop works on but I would take the rear suspension to a VW shop if there are no reputable Porsche shops around you.

I had a similar sound coming from the rear end. It was a thumping that was present whenever the wheels were turning. I stopped driving it and finally got it on jackstands. Pulled Axles and wheel bearings and the last bearing I looked at was the culprit!
