Is it just me or are these cars not real easy to work on ? I'm use to things like 68 -70 Roadrunners, Chargers, Super Bees.
I have a haynes manual for the 924 but most of it still seems greek to me. I don't think they did as good a job on the Porsche manual as they did on the old muscle car manuals . LOL Anyway, I am not a fan of idiot lights. How difficult is it to install an aftermarket water temp gauge. Oh and where is this coolant flange located ? I assume I have to mess with it to put in a new gauge. The pics in the manual are not that great . thanks for the input ! Gary

Don't you have an engine temp gauge in the left instrument cluster?

Find the temp sender on the engine, take off the wire and ground it with the key on. See if the gauge moves. If it does replace the sender.

You can install an aftermarket gauges with the stock sender. I have noticed this only to work with the water temperature sender, not the oil pressure or fuel level. In the cluster of all those wires it is the blue/yellow one, not the blue/black like Haynes says. Just repalce the stupid clock with a water temp gauge
![]() I used Dolphin digital gauges so those are the only gauges i can vouch for.

Ya know, if the sender is bad, installing a new gauge won't help!

After a bad experience with the stock temp. gauge on my 924S, I replaced the clock with a VDO temp. guage. I extended the sender wire across to the console, ran a power lead from a switched source and hooked up a ground wire. For a guage light, I reused the stock light that had been in the clock. Since I really did not trust the sender, I replaced it at the same time. This is a very easy job that will take no more than 1-2 hours.
Good Luck! Fred Cook '88 924S (sold) '80 911SC coupe |

thanks!
Guess I'll do the test SoCal recommended and either switch out the sensor or gauge as the case may be. Looks like a busy day next weekend with needing to replace a thermo switch too ! Thanks again !
