Hey, i have a 1984 944 and it had a limited slip on the previous transmission, and we swaped that out for a used non limited slip differential transmition. well, the transmission we just put in locked up and we think it is the differential because each wheel spins freely, instead of one spinning the opposite way of the other. Is it possible to switch the differentials from the old to the new one? Can i do it myself? If anybody has any information on this it would be appreciatedd, thanks.
P.S. My rear defrost cable is disconnected from the lines on the window. i would saulder it back up but i am afraid it will cause the window to crack. i have tried to take it to some window and glass shops but they wont do it. Does anybody have any ideas on how i could fix it? I dont want to break an $800 window. should i just leave it how it is, i dont use it very much? Thanks. |

You can try to epoxy it back on with the epoxy they use to repair the defroster grid. I have seen it used on other cars. Its like an epoxy with copper chips susspended in it. Will probably add some resistance and may effect some of the opperation. But its the only way i have seen it done.. i would not try to solder it myself !!!!

I wouldn't bother with the window defroster.
Yes, you can swap differentials - you can even rebuild the one that is bad. However, make sure you keep the ring gear that is bolted to the diff with the same transmission it came out of (they unbolt from the diff) AFJuvat

Do you still have the copper plate that attaches to the grid? If so, get the conductive epoxy mentioned above. Any parts store will have it. It's kind of pricey (~$8 for a one time shot) but it worked well on mine. I also replaced the pigtail wire as it was so brittle that it just crumbled when bent.

You can solder the copper connector back on the glass. You just have to be quick about it.
Clean the connector and re-tin it. Make sure there is a thick layer of solder on it. I use a heavy duty soldering iron that will heat the tip quickly. I hold the clip in place with needle nose pliers and heat the clip from the back side with the soldering gun. When the solder flows I release the trigger on the soldering gun but leave it in place to cool down. If you have a soldering iron you need to use the heavy duty ones. This is a bit trickier as you have to hold the clip with the pliers and put the iron to it. Remove the iron when the solder flows.

As many of you know, I work at the Ford Glass Plant here in Nahville. We make most of the windshields and some of the body glass. I use to work in the back window dept. We always soldered the defroster clips on the glass. So Cal is right in his directions. Heat it up quick. Also take a little steel wool, the lightest grit you can find, and buff the area you will be soldering on. This will expose the silver paint of the defroster grid. Then solder directly onto the silver. The defroster grid is painted on using a silk screen with a special paint the contains high amounts of pure silver.
