Porsche Crest Rain

Is it me or is the 944 extremely difficult to drive in the wet? I have all weather tires on.
It hydroplanes even in moderate rain...... and it scares the crap out of me if it rains on the interstate. God I wish this car had ABS.

My 924S is a darling in the rain. "All Weather" tires don't mean squat if you buy a junk brand. I use 3-season Bridgestone Potenza RE950's on my car and the wet traction is exceptional. Snow traction is also surprizingly good for 3-season tires.

I have never wished for ABS on any non-ABS car I've ever driven. The 924S gives great pedal feel and allows wonderful control.

How much tread is left on your current tires? Are they inflated properly? If they are directional, are they on the right way?

Yeah, the "all weather" moniker refers to the tread pattern, and does not guarantee grippiness of the rubber compound to a wet road or snow.

it also depends on how much water is on the road. here in seattle when it rains it usually just drizzles or mists, not the heavy downpour you often get in the south. so hydroplaning rarely occurrs around here.

if you run over puddles of standing water, your car will hydroplane regardless of what car/tires you have.

The number of P-car owners in the Seattle area is encouraging. I'll be moving there shortly and it's nice to know there will be local people to badger with questions. Though I suppose that the drizzle and mist will force me to replace that pesky intermittant wiper relay.

i was scared of driving the 944 in the wet back on my old tires, and justifiably so -- i ended up having an accident.

But since getting these awesome, wide Dunlop 9000s, I barely have to alter my driving habits at all in the rain. I haven't lost traction with them yet.

it's probably due more to the tread pattern than the width. generally the wider the tires (and the higher the speed), the more likely you'll hydroplane. skinny tires cut through water much easier so they hydroplane less at the same speeds.

You are correct sir. Skinny tires also work better in the snow.

Before the Dunlop 225 60's, I hated drivng in the rain. Now it's pretty good, except for the spray/visability factor you will always get from the other cars/trucks.

I've always been a fan of Bridgestone rubber. It has always given me good wear and good grip. It's absolutely amazing just how much difference a set of tires can make, isn't it.
