Question removing front struts

does the caliper have to be removed?

haynes and clark's garage don't say to remove, just want to confirm.

Thought you said it was the wheel bearings?

not sure yet.

might be bearings, cartridges/struts and just wanted to confirm haynes/clarks, where removal of the calipers wasn't needed to remove the struts.

To remove and service a strut with out mucking up the alignment too bad AND not bleeding the brakes you should remove the brake calipers. Use a wire coat hanger to support them from the chassis.

Remove the struts, spindles and rotors as a unit. Leave the A-arm on the chassis. You will have to remove the tie rod and the calipers. Or leave them on the struts and bleed the brakes.

I don't like getting brake fluid all over the place when I don't have to.

I would be more concerned with getting the large nut on the top loose. But do it after you take the strut off and have some spring compressors on it.

Emphasize spring compressors. Serious injury can result otherwise. Best left to a pro if in doubt.

Cool

i did the cartridges yesterday with a "real spring compressor", packed/adjusted the wb's and the ball joints are giving up the ghost, a little slop.

i scribed the back of the strut and it tracks better than before.

the nut was easy with an impact wrench.

the ball joints have rivets.

do rivets mean original ball joints? not bad for 20 years.

needing to drill them out, i'll probably take it someplace, possibly a cliff.

Scribed the back of the struts? I take it you removed the spindles from the struts? Much easier to remove them from the ball joints.

Get a good carbide drill for the rivits as they are work hardened from being peened over. A good set of ball joints come with the bolts.

Check out the bushings. These may be original.

Keep tabs on the top nuts. These tend to loosen up after you change the cartridges.

did the 2 bolts, the one goofy looking one, flat on one side, removed the 4 nuts on top, dropped it down, replaced the cartridge, put it back in, 4 nuts on top, lined up the scribe mark, tightened the 2 bolts/4nuts.

it's all together, doesn't pull, noise is gone.
the top of 1 cartridge had separated inside the strut, probably the noise.

i've only got a single speed drill and don't know if i'll do it.
bushings are something i haven't done and will probably bite the bullet and have to pay someone.

there's always a cliff it could fall over.

i'll watch the top nuts, maybe double nut 'em.
