Porsche Crest speedometer issue!

My speedometer is currently not working on my 84 944, any easy fix or does the whole assembly have to come out of the dash?

i cant tell you whats wrong, but i know there has been many a thread started about this same thing. Use the search button and search for "Broken speedometer" and you should find what you are after.

Good luck

Mike, you should put your year/model of the car in your signature too.

Just drive by the sweet sound of the engine.

The speedometer on the 84's gets its reading from the driver's side wheel.

As was mentioned, the speedometer cable is broken likley. The cabel plugs into the back of the speedo gauge, through the firewall, loops in the engine bay to the left front hub. Pull the wheel off, pry off the dustcap. Use a hex key to remove the clamp. Pull out the cable from the back of the hub. Tape the new cable to the old cable to help fish it through the firewall. You will have an easier time removing the steering wheel with a 24mm socket. Push the speedo gauge fowards by reaching under the dash. Pull the old cable out and reconnect the new to the gauge.

Also make sure you have a circlip to secure the cable to the hub.

On the early cars, like everyone here has stated, it is most likely a broken cable.
