alternator part what is this
I went to have my alternator checked today. We tested it on the car and it drops .01 every few seconds, within 30mins its down to 10 volts. I pulled it and also had it tested puts out a steady 14 volts.
Tested it three times at 2 different places. Both show the alternator was good. Only thing is they said it maybe this part thats not working right. ![]() And from what they told me they are not sure what this part is and what it does.Currently mine looks burnt and it hangs off the alternator its a Bosch part but the numbers are bruned off of it. I see where it connects but it dosent stay they, keeps falling off. What would this part be called and where could I purchase one. I think this is a photo of a 86 mine looks just like it but it snaps into place. It doesnt have the screw hole. I manage to get some of the numbers off of it 0 29X 800 where the x is im not sure also has 2.2 uf/100V- thats all I could see

...it is a static suppressor for the radio. For all the good it does you can throw it away. It has no effect on the function of the alternator. Doug

The fact that they said "maybe this part is bad" not even knowing what it was should make you think you need to find someone that specializes in alternator repair (like me). Doug

What would be my options?
I called around and everyone told me that they would rewind it from $50 to $125. Most places I called said they would do it on the average of $85. But that dosent include anything else from what I understand. Ive tried bypassing the voltage regulator and it dosent make a difference in voltage, it still drops.

Followed the Haynes manual and placed the screw-driver in the hole on the alternator.

Just get another one from someone who is scrapping a car. A good used one will probably run you $50.

How did you bypass the voltage regulator?
If you did it correctly you should get at least 15 if not 16 volts. If not then you need a new/rebuilt alternator. What shape is your battery in and the wiring to it?

Ive had the battery replaced 3 times in the last year they tell me it fuses the cell. Ive rewired batt/alt/starter. The wiring should be good. And when I bypassed the regulator the voltage still drops.
When I first crank her up. I get 14volts off the alt. then its starts to drop 13.99 , 13.98 every few seconds it drops a .01 eventually over a thirty-minute period it finally stabilizes around 10volts.

Ive been looking calling around at the auto parts stores. What would be a good brand and place to buy a rebuilt alternator. Advance Auto, Pepboys, Autozone, O'Rielys. Any of these places?
Ive found them around $150 plus year warranty. They say the have Bosch parts in them. Which one should I get some have the 115 amp and others carry the 90 amp. I think the 90 amp is what was original on my '83 Is there anyother method to tell if this thing is bad. Something I havent tried yet? Or could it be something else on the car itself?

Find a reputable rebuilder in your area and take the alternator to him. I don't think the larger amperage alternator (later model 944's) will fit the mounting on the engine. Some have transplanted later model US car alternators. Don't know which. I suggest you search this forum.

I took the alt. off to get checked by a specialty place to get checked out they told me the brushes are bad and I think he said bearings anyway plus a new regulator for $60. I get to pick it up tommorow.
Maybe all will be good. If its not raining maybe Ill get it back in and get to test it ![]()
