NO, not another broken timing belt-but close...

Changing the front seals on my 977na and found this...



The timing belt is walking off the cam spocket and rubbing against cam housing cover. Is there a fix for this?

Please Help.

Check the belt tension pulley and it's supporting structure. Pulley could be loose. Support stud bent or pulling out of block/tensioner. Or if a spring loaded tensioner, the tensioner arm could be loose. The flange on the timing belt tensioning pulley always goes toward the block.

The water pump pulley/roller could be loose or if a rebuilt water pump not machined correctly.

Always look at the pulley or roller before the trouble spot on toothed belts.

I have found the lower screw that hold the rear cover to the cam housing missing. I also notice some play on the adjusting gear. It's also sound a little rough when I spin it. I'm going to replace these and take it from there.

The "adjusting gear" is the tensioning pulley?

It's not a gear. It's a pulley. Nomanclature is important. Take the headlight motor apart if you want to see a gear. Or the transmission.

Also the small smooth round idlers that just barely touch the belts or come close are called rollers.

One other thing is if you have that spring tensioner for the timing belt and you haven't done the work on the car from day 1, those bolts can be stripped or near stripped from prior belt work. And the tensioner will then cause all sorts of problems. This is when helicoil is your friend.

Well I'm ready to replace the tensioner (gear ) and I took a close look at the old adjuster:



Is this positioned correctly or is it backwards?

Should be a washer under the bolt in the upper right. Kind of an elongated washer.
