Hey
i am pretty sure that my belts were done about 20000 miles ago. How often do i need to do them and how can you tell if you do. my engine is giving off a little bit of a whinning sound that i think is coming from the fan or belt. Is it time for me to get new belts. if so where can i get the parts online at a decent cost, how much can i do myself, and how much is this going to cost me. I am not bad with cars and my dad is really good with em so if this is a do able project let me know and please post any how-to websites you may know of. thanks

just tighten them a little, and the belt squeek should go away.

20 to 30 thousand, three years. Look for teeth spliting off of the belt. Or missing teeth. Bad tensioning pullies can lock up and strip teeth off of the belts. In most cases a broken balance belt will wrap up in the timing belt taking it out too.

My belt schedule is replacement at 30K miles, retension at 1.5 K and 15K miles. Belts are cheap..... new valves and head work aren't.
I think Porsche recommends a 60K mile replacement with tensions at 1.5K and every 15K miles. Speedy ![]()

so all i need is timming belt. Thats like 50 bucks. I thought there was a lot more involed with this. what do you replace on these cars after every 30 to 40000 miles. I thought it was like a 1000 dollars worth of crap. Not just a 50 dollar belt. Am i missing something.

Time and balance belt. Replace these as a set.
Pullies and rollers depend on their condition when you do the belts. Most just replace them as insurance. If you are familar with the sounds your car makes you just might be able to hear a bad pulley before it locks up. The bet is about $1500 IF your timing belt seperates and the valves get bent.

Did I show you guys I have a mod that takes care of the valve-bashing when you break a belt? Take a look at this:
![]() I've come up with a cutting-tool and jig that bolts to the head-studs when you have the head off. Cuts the two reliefs to the proper depth. Gonna be available on a rental basis soon. ![]() I still quite perplexed as to the durability of this timing-belt. On my previous Supra, I changed the belts every 125k-miles and it had to drive TWO cams nonetheless... |

Changing the belts too soon makes more sense than attempting to extract every mile from a good looking belt, espcially if you like to wind it up when you drive it. My last belt change included some rollers which made the car exceptionally quiet..
