1986 951 questions about standard equipment.
I've heard some rumours about the '86 951's that I was wondering if anyone here could confirm or disprove.
Namely, I've heard that the '86 cars have forged rods rather than cast and that the 86's also had the transaxle cooler. Are either of these true? And if the second is not true, then that leads to the question of did all the transaxles with the oil cooler have an LSD? Thanks much! Aaron

The oil cooler was part of the M030/758 "sport running gear option"
M758 was the oil cooler and LSD option. M220 was another LSD option. It's possible to have had a non-lsd AOR trans with an oil cooler. The cooler was not listed as an option, which tends to mean either it was stock in certain circumstances or it wasn't. So anything is possible. Nearly all the late ROW 951 had one. I can't answer the con-rod question, but will research.

Thanks! That's what I love about this place. There's always someone with the answer.

AFAIK, forged con rods, LSD diff and an external oil cooler were standard equipment on '86 951s.

LSDs were an M220 or M758 (40% locking) option on '86 951, not stock.
Oil coolers were much the same too.

Thanks Britwrench! M758 is what I'll look for. I only knew to look for M220 and didn't know that the M758 included the LSD as well. Should have the 951 within the week.

I stand corrected. My' 86 has both LSD and cooler, but I never checked the option codes, so I'm looking for either M758, or M220 on the sticker?

I have 4 trannies
86 951 - LSD and cooler 86 951 - NO LSD and Cooler 86 944 - Both with coolers. I am pretty sure I read somewhere that all of the 86 models had cooler but differed in LSD and non-lsd. The 86 has forged. There was some mixed information saying that the 86s were the only ones ...... but later I recall reading that all the turbos have the forged rods. Although the casting codes are different (hence the arguments). I am pretty sure that it was thought that the 87's did not have forged but I recall reading some info that the casting codes were different but in fact they were still forged. The only NA's to have forged rods were the 83 and part of 84. As far as I recall.

Not all 86's have the transmission cooler. My 86 NA didn't have it. It was an option as well, but since so many transmissions get swapped around, the option codes are nearly meaningless in a lot of cases.

I think all the '86 951s had the cooler and forged rods. When you get the car check the codes, under the back carpet on a tag by the spare.

AaronM, You want to look only for the the M220 code and if it is the original trans it will have a cooler on an '86 951. |

Every '85 951 I've seen has the oil cooler, but most '86s did not come with 220/lsd, I've only seen 2 (both black on black, coincidentally).
