Hello,
First off - I'm new here - found what I considered to be a great deal on a '89 944 (have yet to pick it up) - 2.7L - however it has one issue: A/C belt is making noise, the ! light is on the dashboard, and the altrenator isn't fully charging - previous owner says odds are it's the compressor clutch, and he even has the part. Few questions: Is there anything different to look out for, or just the usual process of: undo the nut for the A/C pulley, then slide out the spacers and the clutch, reassemble with a new one? What size nut is holding the pulley/clutch on the compressor spindle? Is this best approached from the topside or underneath the car? Thanks in advance - hopefully I'll be able to contribute some of knowledge in the future. |

Welcome to the BBS
Make sure the belt is tight enough before you start tearing things apart - the alternator\ac belt is supposed to be very tight - 1 - 2mm deflection at the most. Also make sure that the alternator is good - you can have it rebuilt for about $100 or so. it is easiest to do this with the compressor out of the car, failing that, from under the car. You may need a impact ratchet to remove the nut (12mm or 13mm). AFJ

If you do end up going with a new compressor, check what's out there... My dad's replacing his old SC compressor with a newer rotory compressor... Although, I don't know much of the specs between different compressors...
