944 chargins system (alternator - voltage regulator)

Hi guys,

There are a couple of us with the 944s that are having trouble and we need some help. Charging system on our 1984 and 1985 944s are not working as they should.

I checked the Pelican Parts Catalog and I see these items for sale, but when I click on the diagnostic troubleshooting info, up comes the diagnostics for a 914 instead of the 944, and that's not a confidence builder.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/944M/POR_944M_ELchrg_pg1.htm

Two of us are going to need some help, so if we are able to change out the voltage reg first, perhaps that's the best thing to do, and if not, guess we're into a new alternator?

Any tips out there?

Regards, P

I do not know the symptoms you will face from a bad voltage regulator, but you may consider pulling yours out and inspecting the condition of the brushes. If they are heavily worn, you may consider replacing it. You can see what a new and worn regulator look like in comparison photos in this Rennlist thread.

make sure the alternator lite comes on when the key is turned on. it's a big part of the system.

I'll be checking this weekend. If I get a new alternator, does the voltage regulator automatically come with it? Just wondering.

You can get the alternator rebuilt at any shop. New bearings, brushes and a voltage regulator shouldn't run more than $100 or so.

New regulator & brushes module is $25 and you don't have to remove the alternator from the car.

First check for corroded connections and grounds in the charging circuit. Look for around 14V at the battery with the engine running.

Take it to Advance Auto Parts for a FREE charging system/battery check before you do anything. Your hands won't even get dirty and it's FREE. What is the condition of the major electrical connections such as the battery terminals, starter terminals, alternator terminals AND ESPECIALLY ALL THE GROUND CONNECTIONS. There are at least nine throughout the car. Are they really nice and shiny, clean and snug?

Send a message via ICQ to Zero10
When a votlage regulator goes bad, one of two things will happen. Since the voltage regulator and brushes are one assembly, I'm calling them the same thing. If the IC part of the voltage regulator fails, you will see over-voltage conditions as you rev the engine, possibly as high as 20V. This will fry things for sure. If the brushes go bad, you will see intermittent charging (or perhaps none at all), characterized by low battery voltage.

As already mentioned, check the condition of the wiring first.

Just what problems are you having with your charging systems?
