Starting Problem
Now that the car runs there seems to be a recurring problem with how it starts. It seems to crank for a longer than usual time and when it starts the engine pulses/surges for a few seconds before it flattens out adn runs smoothly. I have replaced the fuel pump check valve and this still happens. I then replaced the fuel rail, fuel pressure regulator and fuel damper. I checked the fuel pressure it is good (about 51 psi if I recall) and then checked it again after the engine has been off for about 20 minutes and it was about 43psi. Any ideas what this could

Adjust the speed/reference sensor.

I should have added that this is only an intermittent problem. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. There is also no one condition when it does happen. It can happen after the car sits, or not, or it can happen after i just shut it off...or not.

SoCal, would the idle control valve or O2 sensor do that? Dan, was the DME you just put in from the same year, make and model?

Try swapping out the battery. I know, sounds strange, but low voltages cause lots of confusion amongst the DME sensors and ignition system. I've experienced this first-hand 'cause Canadian winters get kinda harsh, especially on batteries. I've had mornings when the battery's run been down getting the car started and it'll run rough till the alternator puts enough juice back into it. Nope, this isn't a warm-up issue, it's a voltage one. At -30C your temp gauge doesn't move for a long time! I'm not saying your car's caught a chill, just that dying batteries masquerade as other things sometimes.

Slam - I have had the battery checked a few times and has checked out ok. Actually I have had this problem since i got the car. I had originally thought it was the check valve.

Sorry - it's a long-standing joke on this board. Do a search for socks and AFJuvat and you'll see what I mean.
Did you adjust your reference sensors as per Hugh's suggestion? How;s the fuel pressure regulator and damper?
