when did your timing belt fail
For those of you that had timing belt failures... how many miles were on the belt, last time tensioned? oil leaks?
I have a timing belt with 14000 miles on it, just retenstioned it... needs front re seal. Im wondering if its ok to drive for a few more weeks.

mine failed at about 10K, due to a bad bearing on the water pump. it didn't seize, it had just altered the angle enough that the edge of the belt was catching on the lip of the pump's pulley.

When I got my car the timing belt had 2500 miles on it, I had it retensioned and went on my way. About 6000 miles later the bearings in one of the rollers disintegrated and ate the belt. Luckily I heard it and shut the engine off, the belt was hanging on to the busted roller and waterpump by about 1/8". VERY lucky. After that I had everything under the timing cover replaced. The previous owner didn't have that done obviously.

The only time mine went was before I came to this forum and I thought my belts were suppose to be changed every 50,000 miles. I took mine to the track one weekend and I had 50,000 miles on it (and over two years old) and I had the engine at very high rpms all day and at the end of the day, I stripped some teeth off it. After that I came here and learned they should be good for 30,000 miles or every two years. If I had a belt with 14,000 miles on it, I wouldn't have a problem running it for a while yet. I have a friend that had 186,000 miles on his belts one time...he didn't even know he was suppose to change them....so it's hard to tell but 14,000 shouldn't be an issue, what's the length of time since it was last changed?

its been about a year. and the rollers were changed. But the oil leak concerns me. Im going to drive it a little, autocross it once. then Ill change the belts and rollers. Fix all the leaks in the front end and be good. Anyone in socal want to come walk me through my first belt change? I have beer, just need a supervisor to drink the beer and give advice. I also came across the factory service manuals, vol 1 thru 6 for cheap.
Just a little nervous about it. It will get started in about 2 weeks.

Clarks Garage is your friend. Clarks shop manual is very good. Just take your time and ask questions no matter how dumb you may think it is. |

The last 944 that I bought had 84,000 on the timing belt. The owner never had it changed. ( he didnt know it had to be replaced) When I changed the belts, they were still in remarkably good condition. So were the rollers.
