Pulling Engine?
I am doing other projects to my 1983 and want to keep it "rolling" while the engine is out.
Can the motor be pulled from above? My thoughts are to loosen the engine supports from the subframe, raise the motor and then separate the supports from the block. The engine is locked up, so if necessary I can remove the intake and head for clearance. Is this possible or practical? Thanks, Todd |

Have to drop the cross member down a bit to get the pan to clear. Then bolt the cross member back into place. My have to remove the sway bar and disconnect the backs of the a-arms to do this. Mark the location of the rear a-arm mounts with some spray paint.
Be careful with the hood. If you leave it on and open it too far it will crack the windshield. Remove the sensor bracket and the radiator. Automatics have additional concerns.

I pulled mine from above, but I had to drop the front suspension frame to allow the engine to move forward some as it came up. Its not bad just 8 bolts counting sway bar. The hardest part for me was the steering wheel shaft. Be sure to put it back on as you go, and don't do like me and forget it and I had to drop the axle back down again to get it to hook up.
I am not sure if the same is required for all engine types mine was the 8v non turbo

I pulled mine from the top. I removed the intake, alternator and a/c unit from mine. I also did all the steps that SoCal outlined. I removed my hood, it's only four bolts and you need it out of the way. I have an auto, so I didn't have any clutch stuff on the back so I easily cleared the headlight bar but you should be able to do that as well. All in all...wasn't that bad. It's easy to tear apart..putting together is the trick!

I dropped mine from below, it is also the Porsche recommended method of removing the engine.

And every Porsche dealer has a full hydraulic lift to do an out the bottom engine removal. I don't like stacking four feet of crossed 4 x 4's under the car to remove the engine. Since it requires a cherry picker anyway remove it from the top.
Maybe when I win the lottery and build my dream garage with the hydraulic lifts I'll do it as Porsche does it.

I did mine from underneath, used 2 jacks on each side and dolly. I took off the head, for clearance, but I don't think I had to:

There is actually a whole thread here on which is better..top or bottom. It seemed like it was split evenly. I personally took mine out the top with zero issues. I did however remove the intake and alternator as someone suggested it would be easier. I am not sure if I had to or not. I just didn't want my car that high up in the air with me crawling around under it....that was the only reason I did the top.
