fixed headlight conversion kit
Anybody know where I can buy the complete kit for a 944? I basically want this look...

GT Racing, although I've heard of quality fitment issues and poor lighting. Probably because it's meant for racing and doesn't quite have that fit 'n finish of products meant for street use. Better off trying to make your own set using projectors and xenon lighting. Mold lenses from lexan sheet.

theres a write up on 924.org about this in the how to section, im not sure how deep it was buried though. there was also recently a post on Rennlist about the conversion as well.

I've done the GT Racing fixed headlight conversion on one of my 944s - it's a pain in the butt. The covers do look good but suffer from at least two fairly major design flaws:
1. There is no direct attachment between the lexan cover piece and the bucket (the fiberglass black part inside). There is a metal bracket that bolts to where the pivot points for the pop-up headlights normally go, and both the black fiberglass bucket, headlight itself and lexan cover all independently attach to that. As such, the lexan covers just kind of "sit" on the bucket and they're subject to vibration and "wiggling"/bouncing up and down while they're there. I'll try and post some pics of my setup in order to make this clearer. I think I can remedy this by sinking in bolts or screws from the side that mate up the lexan cover to the fiberglass bucket, but I fear it's going to look like hell (you'll see screw points sticking through the bucket from the outside) or have to figure out a way to do a clean screw install from the inside of the bucket, which is impossible to access since the lexan cover is on it (catch-22). Difficult problem to solve. I'm sure I can figure something out but just haven't had much time to futz with it lately. 2. The lexan covers are very subject to scratching and fogging. 3. The headlights that came with my kit were the wrong ones (orientation of pins didn't fit the electrical harness for the standard 944 bulbs, requiring me to go to about four different auto parts stores and fish around for lights with the correct pin set). 4. Since doing the install, the low beams work fine but the high beams do not - they make one bulb get brighter and the other one get dimmer. Not sure if this is related to the bulbs somehow - gotta' check it. Point is, nothing is gonna' be easy about this. It is nice to be rid of the pop-up lights and associated difficulty with lining up the panel gaps properly though. ![]() But for $500, I would have expected something a bit better thought-out.
