Steering rack vrs inner tie rod ends

Hi,
Can anyone advise me how to tell the difference between worn inner tie rods and end play in the steering rack on my 87 924S?
I'm getting a clunking from that area on the passenger side when I move the steering wheel back and forth.

Is there any way to fix a worn steering rack with too much play between the housing and the rack?

Thanks for any help you can give.

I am not certain about this procedure, but I think it should work and would be the first thing I would try. I think the rack has a hole where you can put a centering bolt which should lock the rack. When you do that, then you can check the play in the steering rack by moving the steering wheel. If the steering wheel moves excessively, then the play is between the rack and pinion or the universal joints of the steering column. The universal joints are visible from under the hood right below the power brake booster. Of course if it doesn't move much, then the problem is from the rack to the wheel spindle. You can jack the car up and move the wheels back and forth to determine how much movement is in the tie rod ends...if movement is there, then you have to figure out which one is moving. Don't put much force on the wheel trying to test the rack/pinion movement, you only are trying to figure out how much wear is there.

you may want to check the ball joints too, clunking can sometimes be a result of worn ball joints, just something to consider

A clunk? Do you Think that a Power steering leak dripped down and removed your Sway Bar Bushing?? Check it at the drop link.
Or any Binding. Also A-Arms could be loose?

Ball joints - good idea. However, there really is slop in the right hand side of the rack. If I turn the steering wheel left about 3/4 of the way to full lock (extend the rack out to the right) and grab the tie rod, I can watch the rack (the boot is pulled away) move noticeably in the rack housing. Not in and out - circularly like a pencil in a water glass. The inner tie rod end is not moving (no slop) but the rack is acting like a bushing is bad.
As for the sway bar, the bushing is dry, clean, and 6 months old. Been there, done that, have scars.

Anyway, I'm beginning to think that the solution is.....
rebuilt rack, tie rods, ends, ball joints, A-Arm bushings yada yada.....

Thanks,
