upper radiator hose getting chewed by fan

Has anyone had this issue? Upper radiator hose sprung a leak, after pulling it out discovered driver-side electric fan blades had been working on it over time. Was on the underside so I didn't notice until it was too late.

This is the driver side hose (larger) to the cooling water tube which mounts on the front of the block and terminates at the bleeder fitting on the cylinder head. Clearance is really tight down there, and the hose itself is smushed inbetween the twin-fan housing and the metal cooling-water branched crossover pipe which interconnects the turbo water pump to the secondary thermostat and other side of the radiator.

Could I use zip ties to secure this hose as far up as possible to the water tube and allow for as much clearance as possible from the fan blades? Or would that just cut into the hose over time as well?

Seems strange that the path of the hose would be designed this way, so close to the fan blades and all.

Apparently, this part of these cars must have been desinged on a monday, or something....

I don't know about the turbo, but on a N/A, the hose is very close to the alternator pulley and will buzz through it if you don't mount he hose and radiator just right.

It could be that your car doesn't have the right hose. When mine got buzzed through by the alternator (was actually an installation error on my part), I found that the part number was not the same as what my car called for.

Hmmm, my '85 n/a has a clamp that mounts around the upper hose and holds it out of the way of impact from any moving parts...

fwiw

Try flipping the hose around, I had the same problem on my 924S, Got a new hose and installed it the other way around and it worked fine.

If you're having the same problem I was, I just shortened the hose by an inch or two and it fits fine and not in any danger now.

Edit: Sorry for the necro post. It's late and I'm reading a couple pages back...
