M030 inserts

I haven't been able to find the answer in the 951 page so I'll ask it here:

Does anyone know if the cap on top of the M030 strut screw off to replace the insert? It's on an 89 951 so it has the treaded body for height adjustment and also the key on top for stiffness adjustment. Also does anyone know the Koni part #?

Thanks

Its a sealed unit, so the insert is not removable. You can send them out to Koni to have them rebuilt (there is another place in the US that can do it, but i forgot the name). Koni part #8742-1007 if you wanted to order new ones through Koni. Originally the M030 struts were only single adjustable but you can now order them and they are double adjustable. I am sure these are still available directly from Porsche as well, both options are probably very expensive. I think your best bet is to have your current set rebuilt.

Although my '88 is not an M030 car, I rebuilt my struts myself with new Koni inserts and the job was much easier than I expected. Attached is the link to my original post that has step-by-step photos of the project.

My struts were not M030 struts but I believe the process is the exact same for rebuilding.

Hope this helps......Vern

Also, http://www.944online.com/home.html is a good source for your strut project - as well as Pelican....see attached link

Yes, I know about the Koni inserts that are sold for the Boge struts. Which basically makes a Boge strut into what I have now. I'm trying to figure out if what I have on the top of the strut is a cap or a nut that can be taken off. And if I can take it off what can I replace it with?
I looked at what 944online has and they metion the Koni retro insert kit is NOT for Koni struts.

You would definately know if it's a permenant cap or screw - just by looking. With the screw on cap, you will only see the top flat chrome metal as the threads are on the inside of the strut. With the permenant cap, it is crimped on to the outside of the strut and so it's about a 1/2 inch thick cap.

You might also try e-bay - since M030 is rare, it's hard to find but if you do an "advanced" search and check "completed auctions" you might find some M030 struts that sold. Don't use 944 in your description - look for all Porsche M030 as they will all look the same.

This would be one way to get a picture of what you are looking for.
