could anyone tell me how to change the front windshield?

I need help on changing the front windshield, it kinda broke, I was wondering what you have to do and what tools do you need, and if it's a DIY job.

I have never done it. You need windhield cutting wire (never seen it just heard about it) to cut the adhesive, then you need the windshield adhesive and gasket. It's ambitious but doable. Its easier because you don't have to worry about breaking the glass at this point.

Call a glass shop and get it done. That's what I did last time, on the racecar (after I put the steering wheel through it). Triumph/Diamond, was about $250 installed IIRC. Use the online quote first, actually. There was even a thread on rennlist a while back about prices, but the later '44 windshields are pretty pricey - a 924 (including S, IIRC) only needs the cheaper earlier style.

It's just too cheap to bother DIY.

EDIT - forgot to clarify - use the online quote service, and then schedule an appt. Otherwise the local shop owner will try to rip you off, add $100 or more to the bill 'cause of the P-car thing. At least that's what I experienced locally. F'ers.

Ya, from what I have heard and read, pay a shop! You will drive in and they will just pop it in, while if you try, you will be pissed and spending awhile doing it.

Call Safelite. They run "specials" all the time. I've had good luck with them.

The labor to remove and/or install the windshield is minimal (it cost me $100). The cost is in the glass itself. There are many previous posts debating the cost of an OE or an aftermarket windshield. Cost varries in you have a antennae or not. Most recommend Safe-lite for aftermarket. Don't know the cost of this but is less than the OE version. An OE windshield from Porsche is around $550 - $600 less installation.

Over in the UK most insurance policies stump up for the windscreen as it's offset as a safety / accident reducing measure. Generally we pay the first £50 - about $100 in your money. Insurance picks up the rest and it doesn't count as a claim. Surprised it isn't global.

Over here they will pay for it, minus the deductable, if you have full coverage on the car.

In that case maybe it'd be worth Porsche 924 updating his policy to fully comp and then putting in a claim. Might be cheaper than buying the glass and having it fitted - AND he'd have better insurance.

I bought an OE windshield. I, initially, called Sunset Imports out of Washington to get their price since they discount OE parts. Their price is/was very good but shipping from Washington to Chicago was very high. I went to my local Dealership, Loeber Motors, and asked if they would match the Sunset price and they agreed. Unfortunately, no one stocks 944 windshields and this would have to come from Europe. They quoted a normal lead time of 1-2 weeks but I could pay a 10% premium, I could have this in 3-5 days. I agreed to the the premium.

I used their recommendation for a glass installer The company is called 'The Glass Authority'. It is a husband and wife team and did a very nice job. Works on allot of Porsches.

Unfortunately, I got to do this again because I cracked (self inflicted) my windshield over the winter. I will use the same resources.
