Cluth check hole
The other day I was pulling out my starter and noticed (or I think) the clutch check hole. Its about a 1.5'' hole above the starter. There was a big chunk of soft rubber sitting there and some smaller chunks. Is this the clutch check hole or no? It seemed to be a big round rubber gear that was inside. How do you tell if the clutch is good or bad. Maybee I can take pictures of it tommorow for you guys. Thanks.

If you've got chunks of rubber falling out of the clutch inspection hole, that's not a good thing.
How many miles on your car? And do you know of the clutch was ever done? They haven't sold rubber-centered clutch discs in a while. I'd guess that if it's come to chunks, your clutch is in its final death throes...

car ('84) has just under 180k, but the clutch feels fine. Not as good as my 924S clutch, which I was told it was new, and a little better than my old 944, PO owner drove about 5k and tracked once in a while.

I would start socking money away for a clutch job. On the old clutch disks there were 2 wear items.
1) the clutch friction material itself 2) The rubber center which degrades, splits and eventually blows. Plan on installing a new clutch kit with the spring centered clutch. If you have a shop do it plan on about 20 hours of labor and $550 for parts. I think there may be a write up in www.clarks-garage.com on how to measure the clutch wear. Speedy
