That "whine" is constant - not just at startup. And the idle is crazy high - hoping to address it here soon.

I JUST did the idle adjustment on my car today actually. It's simple and should take about ten minutes (unless your car was already fully warmed up from driving). Personally I've never experienced belt whine unless it was cold and the belts were not tightened enough.

Haynes manual said I need "special tools" to do an idle adjustment, and that I needed to have it done by a dealer? Do you think it is more likely an adjustment, or vacuum leak?

Could be both. I have a small vacuum leak at the moment but my idle is pretty stable. After adjusting my idle myself to the correct specifications the idle is at least twice as smooth. I use the Haynes manual too as a reference but you'll find the most informative are Porsche's shop manuals and a website called Clark's Garage Home Page . Look under I and you'll see how easy it is to adjust the idle. You just have to use a wire jumper to connect two terminals (takes about 10 seconds) and start up the car. You'll use a flat head screwdriver to twist the adjustment screw clockwise until you get to about 950 RPM. Do this with the A/C fan off and the A/C off. Then just unjump the plug, put the cap back on, and start the car. Should run better. If there's still problems it could be vacuum leaks or the AFM (air flow meter). Maybe something else even, I'm still pretty novice myself.
