Front end noise???
I have a 85/2 944 with 159,000 on it. About 3 years ago I replaced the control arms, ball joints. Now I get a click sound when I turn left. With the car stopped I put my foot at the top right tire and pushed it and get the click. The noise is coming from the right side of the car.
I,m not sure if it,s a wheel bearing or the ball joint. What do you think??

grab a wheel with a hand on each side and pull it back and forth. If there is movement it is the wheel bearings.

I would look at the front struts and the top mount. How old are the struts? Did you try to tighten the top strut nut? The strut spring may not be seated firmly in the top and bottom plates. Is there any space between the end of the spring, top and bottom and the groove end in the plate?
You did replace the ball joints. To check the wheel bearings, raise the tire and grab the wheel at 12 and 6 oclock. You should feel some play, not much. The washer in the wheel nut is supposed to move with a flat screwdriver that is not braced. I have found that if you follow this method, the wheel bearings are too loose. I have always set the washer using the screwdriver method, but bracing it against the inner hub. If I can move the washer with normal force, I tighten the nut. My final test is to let the wheel down-this presses the bearings against the races, jack up the wheel again and do the 12 and 6 oclock test. If I can "feel" the tiny play, it is good. If I feel no play, I go back and loosen the nut 1/8th of a turn. GL John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S Last edited by John_AZ; 05-31-2009 at 11:36 AM.. Reason: top strut nut---no bolt |

The front struts often cause this problem as John mentioned. I would check that first. Then I would look at the sway bar bushings; these are also often the solution to this problem.
As for wheel bearings vs ball joints or tie rod ends..jack up the car and see if you have play at all four positions. If you get the play at 12 and 6 and 3 and 9 then wheel bearings are probably causing the play. If you get the play at 12 and 6 only, then look to struts and/or ball joints. If you get the play at 3 and 9 only then look to tie rod ends or rack. My guess is it's the sway bar bushings or in the top of the strut.
