Strange Gauge Problem

I have a weird gauge problem. Even before the car is started in key pos 2 the temp gauge pegs to full hot, it will stay that way until the car is running for like 15-20 minutes, i hit a hard bump in the road or if I tap on the glass hard. What could it be ????????

pull the cluster apart and clean the contacts on the back side. the little football looking things. the center is power and the 2 outside ones are the grounds. I used 1500 sandpaper and it worked just fine. worth a shot before you condemn your gauge
