Timing belt question
I'm doing my belts. Printed instructions from Clark's Garage. It says to remove the crankshaft bolt then the power steering, alternator, and balance shaft sprocket as one unit. Later it mentions possibly needing a small pry bar for one of the steps, but it makes removing the crank pulley sound like removing the belt covers after undoing all the bolts. Do I need a puller, or a prybar? Or am I just missing something real obvious?

This may not answer your question directly, but I've had the crank pulley stick on me to where I had to use a puller. I've also had it come right off too with nothing more than my hands. You need to remove the crank pulley to get the back timing cover off though.

Hello There:
First, after removing the crankshaft bolt the pulley will come off no problem. Next, there are four (4) 10mm bolts that need to be removed. You will need a gear puller, at least I did, to remove the balance shaft drive gear and then the cam drive gear behind it. Be careful not to loose the key on the crankshaft. Good luck with that! Exitwound is correct; you will need to remove these to be able to do the job such as change belts and change out your seals. Hope this helps. ![]()

if doing the belts you dont need to remove the pullies or gears, only if doing the seals

It's not that hard. You have to be careful when slipping the new cam belt past the small space between the balance belt sprocket and the rear cover, but it can be done. Don't crimp the belt, but it will slide into place through there. Removing the pulleys is a PITA in comparison since you have to also remove the starter and install a flywheel lock.

OK, for belts only you can get by without a FW lock if you are careful and you don't need to remove the CS pulley. However.....you got to be careful and take a good look at all the components. There is a good chance an idler or pulley has gone south on you.
