Torn shifter boot.

My 951S has a leather boot that completely covers the knob of the shifter (don't think the 924S has this) and it is pretty worn out (a piece is missing where my thumb contacts the knob). Are replacement boots available? If so, where? And at what cost? There are also 2 tears in the rubber boot underneath, but I don't really think that is a problem, is it?

Wild Man, I know they sell shifter boots on ebay, and the rubber boot helps keep heat and fumes from coming inside so it needs to be replaced. You might want to place a WTB on here and one of the gents that parts out cars maybe has one for you.

Cheers,
Larry

The rubber inner boot is available from Pelican Parts # 477-711-270-B-M100 for $25.50. Though the cuts/splits wont hurt anything other than letting a little heat come from under neath.

The shifter boot is available from many suppliers... I got mine from Top Gaiters (UK) off ebay... Not hard to put on but you gotta reuse your shift pattern insert.

though Pelican Parts also has them PEL-PP905995, or PEL-SHB-412 and is $39.95 or you can get the whole knob with boot PEL-PP-900562 for $77.95.

The shifter rubber splits could be fixed with silicon rubber sealant too

OK, it's a done deal. I wasn't really happy with the prices presented in the last few posts, so I went to ebay and found one for <$19, including shipping. The only "catch" is that it is made of simulated leather (vinyl), but that is something I can live with. It might even wear better than the original leather one. As for the rubber boot, I will just silicone it, and be done with it.

I have a question as to what is the best sticking brand/type of silicone to use? Let me tell a short story...

I had a Saab 9000 turbo at one time where one of the PO's had siliconed the SR to the roof, and I decided to remove the silicone and fix whatever leak(s) I could find, so I would then have a working SR. But I ran into unexpected problems when I tried to remove the silicone. All silicones that I have ever used could be pulled from the surface that they were stuck to without too much hassle. But not the stuff that was used here. Now maybe that individual did a real good surface prep job, but it still blew my mind how well it was sticking. I ended up having to use a blade to cut it free, but that still left a little bit adhered to the surface that basically could not be removed without damaging the surface.

THAT is the stuff I want to use to repair the 2 cracks in the rubber boot. Does anyone have any idea what type or brand of clear silicone that may have been?

Guys, just to add a little info th the discussion, the 944 had (at least) two shifter boot styles:
Style one is the inner rubber and outer leather boot and shift lever is one piece and all sewn together as part of the shift lever; The 2nd style the leather outer and inner rubber are separate from the shift lever. I think pelican has both styles but not in all colors. For instance my 944S has the one piece design in burgundy and I haven't been able to find it anywhere. 928leather.com (or something similar) said they could fix me up, though.
