Broken Balance Shaft Belt

So, I recently became a new Porsche owner. After some reading I determined it would be a very good idea to replace the timing belt, as I had no idea when it was last done. Ordered the kit from PP.

When we got in there, the balance shaft belt was busted. We replaced both as well as the the rollers.

Good thing that's the balance shaft belt and not the timing belt! | TweetPhoto

Is there anything I should watch out for as I do not know how long the balance shaft belt was broken?

It drives like a completely different car now!

Thanks,

Jordan

Look for cracks in fuel rail and funny oil pressure readings (indicating a cracked oil pickup tube.)

Thanks George!

Oil pressure readings are at 5, unless car is warm and idling then they go to a bit over 3. I'll check the fuel rail.

Did you replace the water pump, or know if it had been done recently? It is recommended to do the pump at the same time as the belts as you have to go through the same procedure to access the pump as you do for the belts. Also, a newly tensioned belt can put enough stress on an old water pump to cause accelerated failure.

Also, don't forget to retention the belt after break in period, which I've read is about 2k miles, but have seen recommendations for as little as 500 miles.

Thanks! I did not replace the water pump, as it looked good, with no leaks. I will definitely do it on my next belt replacement in 2 years.

Hi Jordan,

You are lucky the BB did not catch into the cam/timing belt.

Make sure you retension the cam belt in 1500-2000km or so.

Nice buy:

ROW vs NA - differences

I recently purchased a 1990 944 S2 ROW car. It was imported from Japan. My question is, what are the differences between the NA and ROW cars?

The obvious:

- My Speedo and Odo are in KM's...

My answer-----Maybe nothing for the 1990 944 S2 between the US & ROW cars out side of interior options.

2.0 Model Outline

The most important feature about the "S" is the cam chain and pads. You must service the cam NOW--especially the way the BB( balance belt ) condition was. You will have a very expensive repair if the cam chain snaps. The Pads wear down.

Congrats & welcome Jordan like you I almost bougth a Silver Rose out of Japan last year but not knowing the car history I decided to go Canadian witch I don't regret even thougt it was a little bit more expensive._____ you were just plain lucky, like John mention the cam chain & pads should be check ASAP otherwise if they let go goodby the 16valves head & hello big bucks for repair .Being a 968 owner myself I can tell you that those are very important maintenance issues on the 16 valves head once done you should be worries free for approx 50 to 60,000 miles. Once you remove the cylinder head cover you will be looking at something similar to this, the pads migth look good to you but with time they get brittle & develop small cracks,Also check your camshafts teeth for stress & use ,recently a fellow RL found two broken teeth on his, like you he was lucky he did not destroy the head.
