a/c controller mods?

Looking into a/c controllers, alot of the used ones are broken externally or just dont work internally and the new ones cost as much as a clutch or two sets of tires.

So thinking about this some more and I am wondering if anyone has figured a way to put the system on aftermarket toggles and control knobs? or even a different aftermarket generic controller.

I am not too good with the wiring custom stuff, I will start looking into myself shortly but was interested if anyone has a solid way to ditch the controller for a more realistic option?

I heard a couple of the DME rebuilder people also rebuild these. I would research that and look for a good-looking example and go from there.
