Hello a new 944 owner S2 3ltr and question over cam tensioner
Hello all. I have just bought my wife a 944 cab for her Birthday ( 40th ) and the last thing I need with all my other projects is issues with the car. So I have remembered that the tensioner is some thing that needs to be done on them can you advise
The car is a 1992 with 89,000 miles on it. It has been serviced and I have part service history but not all 60/70% of the history. It does not seem to be clocked on the miles all looks genuine The car has had a fair bit of work done on it by the PO ( who I know ) new fuel lines, brake pads , rebuilt calipers etc CV joints and other bits and bobs of usual problems to fix. Plus all the cam belts have been replaced and other belts.. But he has not changed the tentioner to the cam and that is my concern what's best to do? Is there a time that it needs doing? just in the mean time should I buy the whole tensioner and for the sake of an hours labour change the pad on the tentioner so at least that is new and then look to book it in to have the whole thing changed ( and use my pad again ) so it's all done. What is the life time of this tensioner once it's been replaced? is there a step by step on line guide on how to do this that I can have a look at..? thanks in advance

First I will show a picture of what will happen if you do not change the pads. This is from another forum but the photos and information is very good. Congrats on the car...sure your wife is thrilled !
As John states above those two links are great info ! Both this site and Rennlist are great sources of info for S2's....and it's far cheaper to keep the maint. up-to-date then to fix it when it 'explodes' ! Also make sure you're aware of the condtion of the clutch....they are very expensive (labor cost) to replace ! best and enjoy ! Joe

912UK__I will suggest that while in there you do all maintenance at once, both the tensioner & the pads ,also check the chain for sign of stress & use.You will need a new valve cover gasket & a bunch of other little parts when doing the job, if you close it & reopen it again it will cost you double,the bolts fastening the valves cover down are expensive and you got to be extra carefull when torquing them, they should be torque at 7ft./lbs rigth on, at 10 they will start to breake as many 968 owners found out. Personally I believe that maintenance mention above should be done at 75 to 80k miles,since they is no set figures for it ,some owners had failures of them parts before they hit the 90K miles mark, so why take a chance.Here is a list off none expensive parts you will need to reinstall your valve cover (not included pads & tensioner) .Valve cover casket/cover sealing ring/rubber grommets for valve cover bolts/trust washers for valve cover,all those parts can be source here on Pelican New parts Catalog.Have Fun.
