Check here for the head gasket set, cam housing gaskets, new cam gear bolt, front engine seal kit and oil pump sleeve, oil pan gasket, Check oil pick up tube and new gasket, timing belt kit, updated water pump NEW, rod bearing kit, New AOS Seals, dip stick seal, have the head checked and machined, send off injectors for clean and new o-rings, Put in new RMS and as you can see the list can go on and on as you find other things to replace.

Realistic worst case scenarios are a snapped timing belt (new valves, possibly new pistons, possibly a new head), an overheat (warped head), a spun #2 rod bearing or either a blown out head gasket or oil cooler seals.
Any of them are fixable by a dedicated DIY-er. Or you can buy a used n/a engine for around $1k and transplant it in for about the same amount of effort, get the car running and then figure out what's going on with the original engine while it's out of the car and on a stand where it's easy to work on. That'd be my recommendation.

It cost me about $2500 for the works with no serious problems to fix, including all the tools I needed and some clutch parts, $500 for the engine, and $200 to balance the bottom end. I did the cylinder honing myself, and determined I did not need to to any work to the head as it looked like it was previously rebuilt. It's not cheap if you intend to replace every bearing and every seal, but if you know your bottom end is good, just head work from a broken cam belt shouldn't be more than about $1000 tops after all is said and done...possibly cheaper. Sometimes it's cheaper to find a good used head, freshen it up, and swap in. Depends on how many valves are bent and if there's any other damage.

I'd say about 5K for a reliable race engine with all the right pieces and 3K for an OK street engine assuming the crank and journals are in spec. Most of the time the cheaper you try to be the more it ends up costing you!

Zims and Lindsey Racing offer complete overhaul kits; rod & main bearings, balance shaft bearings, all gaskets and seals, valve guides, connecting rod nuts (NO! your removed connecting rod nuts are not reusable!) and piston rings for your engine (85/2-86 $875 Zims).
Or all the above parts plus; the balance shaft bushing, locktite 574 block sealant, assembly lube, engine block freeze plug, piston pin clips and oil pressure relief valve seals from Lindsey is only $809.95. Then add in your machining costs and begin the fun, I did one for a friend, and it came out to roughly 2k.

Lindsey's website says they'll do the entire rebuild for $4500. That includes all cleaning, machine work, honing, parts, and assembly. Knowing what I know now, that is actually a pretty good deal.

i just checked out lindsey racing . you better read just what you realy get for the price . one thing they offer as an up grade is the mahle pistons . the OE STOCK pistons that came in your 944 are mahle . so they are not up grading what porsche used . the up grade is only on there end .

I've said it before and I'll say it again... Take EVERYTHING you read put out by the lindseys with a grain of salt. They are not the experts that they make themselves out to be. They do have some nice products but do your due diligence before using anything they sell.
I won't say more in a Public forum. I do buy a few parts from them, mostly out of convenience. If you are looking at a non-stock build I suggest Paragon Products. These guys really know the 944s. If you are going back stock I would look at Pelican. |
