Ref. Sensor Bracket

How many versions of the ref sensor bracket are there? I bought this one:

The car is an early '85:

What am I missing- the TDC sensor, and also isn't there a sleeve that goes in one of the bracket holes?

The large hole is so you can line up tdc visually, at least on the early cars. There is a line on the flywheel indicating tdc. One sensor reads a pin on the flywheel and the other reads teeth on the ring gear.

The sleeve goes in the sensor bracket in the bolt hole that isn't slotted. No sleeves on the sensor holes.

To answer your first question, there are 3 versions of sensor brackets.

The early cars had a 2 hole version--speed & reference sensors. Should be fine for your early car.

Late cars had a 3 hole---speed, reference & TDC sensor

You can see from the picture the sensors are different. The left "adjustment" hole is different.

The final version had only one sensor----for the 968s and 944S

The sleeve you refer to was installed to sheild the sensors from the electrical interference caused by the high torque starters. This is also a reason not to cut out the bell housing sensor/bracket area. The bell housing helps sheild the sensors from the interference.

So is it necessary to have the shield? Ive read about the problems with the EMF from the smaller starters, is mine one of those that could cause a problem?

Also, is there a cover for the TDC hole?

No cover for the TDC hole---DUCK tape works

I saw in the first pictures the flywheel looks badly rusted. You will have to deal with this later. I can oly imagine the bolts, nuts and everything is rusted or corroded together.

I do not see any wear on the starter gear teeth---just rust.
Has this car been in really deep water?

Your starter if it works should be OK. If you need to replace it, try to get a remanufactured starter and not a low cost rebuilt.

I think you need more than WD-40

Looks like the larger style starter, the bracket you have will do fine. But if you ever put in the smaller starter, you will need the later style bracket and sleeve.

I also dont buy that slotting the bellhousing causes anymore EMF from the stater.

Yeah, the sensors mostly protrude past the point on the bellhousing where the cutout is anyway. Even if it isn't perfect, the cutout saved me enough time on my RMS replacement to be more than worth it.

I have cut out the bell housing on the '88 and did not on the '87. The '88 has the original starter and the '87 has a Bosch "remanufactured" starter. I have experienced no hard starting issues on either car.

Techno Duck is correct when he advises the use of the sleeve with the newer high torque starters or if the owner has hard starting issues.

Technical Bulletin:

Porsche decided to go from "slots" to "holes" to sheild the reference sensor more adequately
