Unhappy Starting problem

I’ve owned my car for about a year now. It’s a 1987. About 99% of the time the car starts great. However, on about 3-4 occasions over the last year it hasn’t start right away. When it does eventually start it then runs very rough. For instance when I give it too much gas it starts to sputter. Then when I have to stop it dies and won’t start again. When I try starting it again it starts backfiring. However, if I let it sit for about 15-20 minutes it starts right away, no questions asked and runs like the fine piece of machinery it is. I don’t know much about cars and I can’t duplicate this for my local mechanic. They are German and I think something gets lost in the translation and they have no suggestions. So I’m giving to you guys to ponder. Any inputs would be appreciated.

Mark

Sounds like a symptom of a bad fuel pressure regulator. But thats a hard one to diagnose. Maybe a faulty fuel injector. Whats bad about a problem like this is one day, whatever it is will go out entirely.

Try a little fuel treatment and fuel injector cleaner. My 86 944na had the stumbles on start-up ocassionaly for about a month. After a couple tanks of treated fuel later, all cleared up. For the past 6-months, seems to have a bit more umph on acceleration.

Well I never got to try the fuel injector cleaner as the problem hard faulted yesterday. Fortunately it happened right in front of my house. The problem turned out to be a faulty connection on the fuel pump. Thanks for the input anyway.
