Mirror Motor Part Question

The passenger side mirror on my 1985/2 will adjust side to side but not up and down. The motor runs, but the mirror does not respond. It moves freely by hand. I opened up the mirror using the tech article instructions and here is what I found:

The plastic (geared rack for lack of a better description) circled in red is missing where circled in blue.

The question I have is, is there a source for for this part or is replacing the entire assembly the only option?

Thanks

Dan

I've replaced both mirror motors since both sides had the same issues as you. I found it easier to replace the entire motor rather than trying to repair those plastic linkage pieces (I typically break more then fix when it comes to plastic) ...

Although I buy most all new parts through this site's sponsor, these motors can be found on eBay for $50-$75 and used ones for much less. In my case, it was worth replacing the entire motor assembly to keep my sanity with these 25 year old Porsche plastic pieces... Both sides have been flawless since the mirror motor swaps.

I was hoping not to have to replace the whole assembly for lack of that one little piece, but looks like that's what I'm going to have to do.

Thanks

Just out of curiousity, it appears that VWs use the same type of motor assembly for the Jettas and Passats. Does anyone know if this are compatible? Is there a cross listing of any such parts that are shared between Porsche/VW/Audi?

And I just pitched out two mirrors cause the bases were broken. Motors and all. Sorry!

I have one that moves up/down but not left/right. Bought a used replacement for $85 and it did the same thing. Maybe some parts out of yours and mine and we can get one working. For the time being I jammed a piece of small rubber tubing between the mirror and the frame to hold it in place.

I'd be interested in finding out if the VW connection pans out.
