Car makes a clunking sort of noise
I'm not sure what this could be. It sounds like it coming from the rear. Whenever I am turning and getting on it it seems to make this sort of cluncking/crunching type noise. It keeps pulling just fine. I have changed the trans fluid and put on new rebuilt axles.
Any ideas? Could it be wheel bearings? 1986 944 Turbo. Stock. |

If you replaced the CVs, it might be the ring and pinion in your transaxle. The pinion bearings are the weak link in the transaxles. Once they start to go, the ring and pinion will start to make noise and after a while the trans may blow up.
The one I had sounded like a chain dragging over metal in the turns.

This trans is a 944 Turbo. As far as I know the RP problem isn't common in these transmission. Also my old 924S RP blew up, but it never sounded like this. My motor mounts are bad. I will try to get a sound clip

Only when you are turning? Wheel bearing, or forgot to torque down the lugs on one of the back wheels? Could also be a broken spider gear tooth.
I would suggest raising up the rear wheels, running them, turning them by hand, etc., to try to help determine where the problem might be.

It will do it when turning and going WOT or close. Also when it is really warmed up sometimes under load it will make the noise. Its very odd.

Turbo, CV Axles, and wheel bearings have all been replaced. Apparently the noise is still there.

Sounds like a shock is bad or a torsion bar carriers bashing is gone? Try compressing each trailing ARM up and down by hand next time car is in the air?
Easy way to check ring & opinion is get in third gear maybe around 35 mph and get on and off gas very quickly too see if there is excessive play.

What is the torsion bar carriers bashing? The mechanic who has also looked at the car said that my rear shocks are bad.
Could it be a bad transmission mount? Motor mounts have also been replaced. |
