Engine

What engines would fit in a 88 Porsche 944? Besides a Porsche Engine. And With very little modifying to make it work. Or is this a dumb question lol.

Very little modifying? -Nothing (other than a low powered 924 2.0 engine).

Alright. Thanks again. Would a turbo/supercharger 944 2.4 4cyl 5 speed fit in my car? or a 16valve?

If your thinking about a transplant why not go with a reliable 968 3.0 ltr, stock 236HP with minimal investement you get another 15 to 20 HP & enougth torque to play with until you get tired.Of course don't matter witch on you chose LTS-951 -S-S2-or 968 you'll have to get either an S2 or 951 tranny & rework the suspension to handle the power. So don't matter witch one you chose it come down to how much of a hole you want to make in your wallet.Another nice & more realistic option will be to find a 2.7 & drop it rigth in there no muss no fuss, agree it won't give you the kick in the (A) that those first options does but think about all the nice upgrades you can do to your car with the money save & lol you still be able to take the girl friend or wife out for dinner in a car that will have a top speed of over 140 MPH

Never heard of a factory 2.4 litre 944. Never heard of a factory supercharged 944 either.

Could you drop in a 951 engine? Sure. But you'd need to re-do the entire wiring harness and replace the DME along with it. And you'd need a turbo transaxle ($500 for a used one without the cooler and without an LSD, $1,000-$2,000 for a used one with a cooler and an LSD) along with a turbo clutch and pressure plate.

Could you drop in a 16-valve engine? Sure. But again, you'd need a different wiring harness and different DME. If you went with the 2.5 litre 16-valve engine you could probably keep the same transaxle, but with the 3.0 litre 16-valve engine you'd really be better off with at least an S2 transaxle.

Neither option is "cheap" in any real sense, at least not relative to what the car would be reasonably worth afterwards, but in both cases the hard points to physically mount the engines in the cars are at least all there.

If you were asking if there were supercharger kits for the 944, I can't say for sure. I think there may have been some at one time, but I don't know off the top of my head if anyone is still making one. I seem to recall people thinking there were issues with the kits that used to be offered, but that may have just been gossip. If you were asking whether it would be possible to add a supercharger to a regular 944 engine, well, technically yes. I've seen some people do it, but it's not cheap, it's not a quick proposition, and because you have to keep the boost low to avoid destroying the engine, you still come out with less power than the 951.

Overall, there really isn't a "cheap" option for an engine swap. These aren't like a '68 Mustang where you can drop in anything from a 4.9 litre straight six to a 7.0 litre V8 and have it all bolt up.

you don't even need to touch the stock engine to get to that speed...

a wide variety of engines can be made to fit. the most popular as stated are the chevy LS/LT v8's. they fit nicely and there is lots of documentation out there regarding that swap. that said, the 944 has a pretty good amount of room under the hood for a car its size. the biggest issue seems to be width of most worthwhile motors, but even that can be slightly worked around with some creative cutting and welding. hell, i did a rough measurement of a 454 (7.4L) chevy big block and it would (barely physically) fit in the 944 bay, but youd have to find some pretty tight tucked headers and an interesting solution for steering and brakes if you did that.

that said i would like to see someone put a volvo short-6 into a 944.

A stock 968 3.0 if well tune will get you a top speed over 155 MPH, a 2.7 in tip top shape will get you close to 140 MPH no doutb about it,that what I meant. That I know for a fact since I had my 968 at little over 155 MPH & my buddy 2.7 close to 140 MPH .Hope I'm not starting a top speed war here

There was an article in Excellence a while back about a man in German who took a stock 1987 924S and dropped in a 951 Turbo S engine, transaxle, and electronics. The car was lowered a bit, and the engine chipped for a bit more power.

It had a top speed of 176 MPH.

And unlike a V8 conversion, there is no custom fabricated parts required. If you want the fast way to a lot of power and speed, this is it.

it most definitely will...porsche underrated the 944NA at 130, a magazine (forgot which one) got it to do 137 on their track, and if you tweak the aerodynamics a little bit (lower the front, close some gaps in the front end, and/or find the slightest downhill section of highway) it will do 140.

ive done it multiple times, once in an early (aware of the optimistic cable speedo, it read 150+) and also in an '86NA on the way back from vegas and other trips (with the electronic speedo, more accurate, still read like 145)

With the stock tire size on my 951, the "accurate" electronic speedometer reads 10% fast. If you had your electric speedo reading 145, you were probably doing only a hair over 130.

The car that Road & Track got up to 137 (test on 4/'89) was a 1989 2.7 liter car, not one of the early 2.5 litre 8v cars. R&T got an early car up to 132 in a test on 5/'82, but only managed 123 with a later car in 2/'86. Some of the ROW 8v cars did manage to touch 140, but those weren't carrying US-spec emissions equipment and the ROW 2.5 liter cars had a 20 hp advantage on US-spec 2.5 liter 8v cars.

Actually the 1989 2.7 will break 140. And the electric speedo in my 88 turbo s, does actually read accruately up to 150 (on the main straight at Miller Motorsport Park), and that is radar verified
