Question Annoying Problem....

I have an annoying problem with my 1985 1/2 Porsche 944. This problem comes and goes (almost with weather changes). Last year I stored my car and when i took it out there was a problem that once you hit 1800 - 1900 rpm I lose all power but the car does not cut out... it just drops to idle speed and once it hits 1800 - 1900 rpm it drops again.
At first I thought it might simply be bad gas... no such luck . The car has gone through a few tanks of fuel since then.
Next I decided to do the cheapest thing (seeing as i'm a student) and i replaced the fuel filter... no such luck... the problem returned.
The problem usually goes away for weeks at a time with regular city driving but returns with any aggressive driving or spontaneously just for fun .
As today is groundhog day I would like to get my car ready for the road again (we have too much snow and road salt for me to drive in the winter). If anyone has any idea what is happening please help.
Some unexplored or slightly explored areas are vacuum leaks and fuel pump.
Also, I was told that the car had a computer (to my surprise) and would like to know the "codes".... Thanks, Amurley.

Lightbulb

I might be the Throttle Position Switch. Check it according to the Haynes manual.

This can be a real bear to solve. I chased a rev limiting condition for months - couldn't get above 4500 rpm. I replaced what looked like a bad speed sensor still to no avail. Then I began to tinker with the air flow meter and found I could change the point that it would cut out by adjusting the wiper position. This also made the car run rich or lean depending on the setting. Ultimately I swapped out the AFM and that cured my troubles.

is it a pricey procedure to replace the AFM (air flow meter)?.... I'm making a list of possible problems and i'm going to sort it from cheapest to most expensive i've got a little time because the damned groundhog saw his shadow and that means six weeks more winter (at least).

Sorry for this being totally unrelated, but I was just wondering what part of Canada you live in.

There are not many 944's here in Fredericton, but here are the one's I know of.
White 944 n/a (late dash)
1989 944 black (is never driven has engine troubles)
944 turbo of some year, red and lives in New Maryland, I have never seen it,but have heard of it.
My 1984 944
and your 944
Anyways it is nice too talk to some one in the city with a 944. Oh and sorry I can't be of any help with your problem.

I had my belts (timming, balance) done at york auto service, uptown off bishop drive. They overcharged me on the belts, but they did know what they were doing and did a good job. So it was worth it because they are not something to fool around with. I do all the rest of my service myself and order most of my parts from the Porsche dealership in Calgary. I have also ordered a few from Performance Products, but it is usually alot cheaper to order from the dealership.

Your problem associated with weather, and hard acceleration..I too, would suspect the AFM as a priimary cause of RPM instability. Air density/temp. weather related and underhood temperature related to driving time and hard acceleration.
