transmissions problem?
I have a '87 924s. My wife was driving it so i don't exactly know what happened. She said that it just stopped moving after she let out the clutch. I tried it and even though I had pedal, it looked a lot like the clutch (standard rudder puck) had gone bad. So I went after the clutch. I found that the clutch was indeed separated from the rubber disk, however it looked as if the limp rings were not that bad. After replacing the clutch and installing the transmission, I was aligning the drive shaft coupling. I did this by placing the car in gear and turning the rear wheels. Once the coupler made contact, I realized it was not turning. Without the coupler hooked up, turning the rear wheels results in turning the shaft. Connected it does not, in fact I can reach in with my hand a hold it from turning. I hear no grinding sounds, everything feels smooth. The CV's appear to be fine. Is it possible that the ring and pinion has snapped and I can't feel it? Baffled? Am I missing something simple?

If it is in gear it wont turn. Has to be in neutral.

Hey Vinman
I'm a traveling man myself. I have considered it not being in gear. I have tried every gear. I'm pretty sure it is in reverse. I'm sure I have the shifter connected properly. If it were not for the fact that the limp ring on the clutch was still in good shape, I would be sure it was clutch. However the fact is the car will not move in gear, I'm afraid it may be something like R&P. I would just expect there to be some sound associated with broken parts. Everything feels smooth as silk. BTW My TT is in good shape and I do have solid contact at the bell housing |

Vinny:
Thanks Bro. You got me thinking maybe there is a problem in the shift linkage. From the exterior, everything looks fine. I am trying to find an exploded view of the interior shift mechanism. |

Happy to meet another brother!
Ok, unless I am missing something, you are saying, with the car in gear, the wheels wont turn once the coupler is hooked up , correct? If so, that is right. You wont be able to turn the coupler with the clutch let out. The engine is holding it back.

Actually, just the opposite. With the car in gear, I can turn the wheels and hold the coupler in my hand. The shaft inside the transmission is not turning. Turning one wheel turns the other. Although I can hold the one wheel while the other turns. Also I watched the shifter while I had someone change the gears and the linkage appears to be shifting properly.
