There you are, mounted on a 951.Btw Porsche do not recommend to mount 18" on any 944s.

I'am running turbo sway bars and will stick to my 16" 6 and 7" Fuches with rear spacers ,I feel any larger diameter rim will make the ride way too harsh as its on the firm side now.
Having said that I feel the styling of the 944 works well with larger diameter rims better than a lot of cars from that era How will the Sydney roads be with the low profile tyres Aussie?,pics when you get them on? |

Oh man...What now?

I like them! What about clearance in the wheel wells? Any rubbing problems in tight turns? How does it effect your speedo calibration? Thanks, Fritz

From the phone number on the sign in the first pic, I'm guessing you're out Richmond way, on Sydney's fringe. Lots of nice driving for a 944 out that way...

My 944 is running a set of Porsche 911 wheels of the era.
With a set of 17's, it's riding pretty well with tyre rub only when it's very heavily loaded. In terms of Sydney roads, only the very worst of the potholes really try to eat my car, however I just avoid those roads as I learn them

Lads,
well.... heaps of response. porschetub, mate waiting on parts she is off the road till next weekend, sydney roads not too bad i avoid crappy roads as much as i can but not much you can do about crappy councils. ernie9944, that makes me want them more seeing them fitted, also tell me why they dont recomend 18" when the rolling diameter wont change from whats on there now? thekidd & Arthropraxis cheers lads 18x8 19x8 19x10 20x10 22x10 iplagolf & CatsEyes Lads according to the fitment guide at my cars present ride hieght and so forth i'm not changing the rolling diameter so it should be fine, but you dont know this till you put them on. as for the fringe of sydney i get around the city abit chasing good deals. Fara, shoot up a pic would love too see what that looks like |

I like the look... a lot! But then I like 18s on 944s. A bit of a harsh ride on my setup but who cares?
Fara, nice ride!

I live in the Blue Mountains, myself. Which is... well, beyond the fringe. But very good driving country for 944s. Maybe some Sydney 944 owners should get together for a country cruise some time? It would be a first, I'd say. I could put a post up on the Rennlist forum about it, too.

Porsche only allowed 17's on the 968 when it was equipped with the sport suspension
Seems there are larger forces generated with 18's vs the cars 15-16" wheels they were designed for. While overall diameter may be the same, the softness of 3-4-5" of sidewall vs 1" of sidewall does make an impact on bearings, hubs, bushings etc. I like them on the black turbo. I don't think they will look as good on an N/A (given the difference in the front bumpers). imho, the S2/951 has the best looking front in the whole line up.

Racer,
fair call... Not try'n to get people off side with this but i was sent a post by 9FF(see link) http://www.porschemania.it/discus/messages/6/Porsche_944_17-141626.pdf Now its breif and to the point but i'm not realy getting a good answer. I'm no expert in anything but if i'm loosing as you say 3-4-5" of tyre wall thickness couldnt i compensate this by adjusting my shock damper? cause as i see it a properly inflated tyre on 16" rim with overly hard shock damper would cause the same problame to those mentioned parts. No idea lads but keep posting cause i love the advice and it will help me in making my choice. peace out |

assuming you had adjustable compression, and not just adjustable rebound, yes, you could dial out some of the harshness

I wish I could share more, but I am not an engineer. I'd like to think that Porsche has a few engineers who have determined that taking an old car, and putting large modern wheel/tire combos will stress components, perhaps to the point of failure.
That said, I can't say I know anyone who has experience such failures. Most "track" folks have upgraded suspensions that can then take advantage of the newer (larger) wheel combos. Most "street" guys do it only for appearance and are not overly concerned with potential failures, given their mild driving styles.

very, very nice!
Interesting pdf. TBH I thought the increase in unsprung weight would also be a factor? Hi porschetub, what kind of tyres are you using? I've been half-heartedly shopping around for 225's and 245's for 16" rims but its not a very good market for them locally. I was looking for something like toyo T1R's or similar.
