Cv axle problem

I recently put a new cv axle on my 88 944. Well a couple of weeks ago I put it to the floor and one them broke. Well, sent it back as a default part and the put the new one on. Well, I was driving it again today and the other side broke when I put it to the floor. Only thing I can think is that there is too much torque in the wheels for it. Idk. Any help?

Are these OEM Porsche quality?

What is breaking? Are the bolts OK?

I am presuming that the cv joints are failing and am guessing they are not EMPI/GKN/Lobro type-2 joints.

Did you replace the joints yourself or did you buy complete half-shafts from autozone, napa, etc?

If you replaced them yourself did you get the good quality joints mentioned above or some inferior cheaper ones?

Did you ensure the cages didn't miss-align when you fitted them?

If you bought rebuilt complete shafts with the lifetime warranty from autozone, etc., chances are they use the cheaper joints and are prone to failure.

If it is actually the bolts that are failing, chances are you didn't clean the threads out or didn't torque them correctly.

If you buy the good quality joints, take care to align the cages and level the shafts before torquing them to the factory torque, and clean the threads out properly before fitting the bolts, this will not happen.

For people doing the job on jack stands. They usually let the wheels hang which causes the axles to angle downwards towards the wheel hub. If you try and tighten the bolts that way the cages can misalign when the wheels get put back on the ground.

Some good info on cv joints and axles in this thread: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/660850-dont-buy-autozone-cv-joints.html

I just did both of my axles on jack stands. How would I check to see if my cages are misaligned?

If you are not getting any noise or adverse effects, vibration, etc, they are fine, it only happens occasionally, it could even be a fault of the cheaper cv joints with thinner cages, but just saying it can happen if you fit the axles that way. I have seen someone fit the axles like this, have grinding issues and found a cage completely distroyed when he replaced it a second time. He leveled the wheels on his second attempt and all went well.

is an acceptable solution to jack the car up, and then puth the wheels on blocks to tighten the shafts?

That's how I'd do it if I didn't have access to ramps or a lift. Jack car up and lower wheels onto blocks to keep the shafts level-ish and the car still raised enough for access.

9FF, Every once in a while I fall into doing something right by accident. When I did my CV's I used my new ramps and used a floor jack to lift the tire off of the ramp to spin the tire/CV joint. Fritz
