Soft Lifter Question
Removed cam tower and stored lifters in oil with the bore up. Checked them upon reinstall and found two to be soft and six to be rock hard. By soft I mean I can depress the "button" easily with my thumb, and by hard I mean I cannot depress the "button" at all with my thumb.
How should they feel? Are the soft ones shot or can they be "fixed"? Should I replace with used or new? Aftermarket or Porsche? Anyone who has some experience with this please post. Thanks in advance, Ken

The general conclusion is replace all "soft" lifters-if you can easily press in the "button"
You may want to fill the lifter with oil at the "air/bleed" hole on the side with a syringe and try again. The lifters should be stored in oil with the side "air/bleed" hole UP. A 10 percent solution of oil and SeaFoam is also suggested to loosen up the deposits inside. Replace the lifters in the same bore they came out of. New INA lifters have a reputation of failing----this may have been solved in the last few years. I do not know. Good used "hard" INA lifters are suggested. Information from posts. Quite a few in fact. Britwrench is a master mechanic and very knowledgeable. Question about lifters What constitutes a BAD hydraulic tappet (lifter) ???? - Rennlist Discussion Forums John

I have 2 new lifters on the way. My others are soaking in oil. Do I need to soak the new ons before install, or what? What is the method used for installing new lifters?

Ken,
Glad you found a couple. Here is a post on actually "priming" a lifter prior to assembly: Rennlist Discussion Forums - View Single Post - lifter priming Use the syringe to fill the lifters with oil at the tiny hole on the side. When you install the lifters... Each lifter goes back in the same bore it came out of. If the lifters are still dripping with oil, just insert them without wiping the oil off for lubrication or use assembly lube as mentioned above. Put a little grease or engine assembly paste on the cam lobes--again for lubrication on a moment of dry start up. Keep the lifters from falling out of the cam by having a thin piece of sheet metal holding them in and slide the metal out at the last moment before the cam touches the head. GL John

Thanks (again) John,
But what does this mean? (note the little hole in the side of the lifer, and the corresponding gallery on the cam assembly).

The hole is always up when storing lifters--laying on side submerged in oil Gallery--a covered passage. ![]()
