Installing a LSD in my 85.5
I will be installing a used LSD (96,000 miles) that I got from a fellow Pelican member in my 85.5, I will change the gaskets, fluid (Mobil 1 75w/90) and want to change to a short shifter any feed back on these, which is best, which to stay away from?
Thanks |

I wouldn't disturb any gaskets that aren't leaking.
I had a schnell shifter in my 84. It took a little while to break in and was so-so. I didn't buy another for my cab. |

Funny you should mention it..
I just installed a Schnell. I had a lot of difficulty during installation, owing to the fact that one of the holes stripped out; I had to buy a tap and dye kit and re-tap that hole. Granted, I think it was a fluke; it doesn't seem to be a very common problem. Now that it's in the car, I'm really liking it; it's reduced the amount of free-play a lot, and shifts feel more sure and secure. If you do have an issue like mine, ********** offered to replace the unit or refund me the purchase price, so that's a good place to buy from. The only kit I've heard bad things about is the Deutsche Parts SSK - you can get them for about $60 on ebay. And, well, you get what you pay for. P.S. If possible, use safety wire on the bolts during installation. A lot of problems arise from folks just using lock-tite; the bolts often shake loose after a while.

The only short shifter worth installing is the Lindsey replacement lever. The factory rear linkage is a very robust piece, and those short shift kits that replace it are not.
Also, I would run Redline gear oil that is specifically engineered for LSD: http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=47&pcid=7
