Amazing what a new oxygen sensor can do

It is like the car has a new lease on life! Everything is much smoother, no more gasoline smell on revs over 3.5K, hesitation on acceleration is gone.

Best $ I've spent on this car so far.

Great news. I too have an 87. How many miles when you changed it? I only have 45,000 miles.

Tom,

GHEN will give you his mileage but Bosch has a 60K change interval on O2 sensors.

Bosch - Oxygen Sensors

But this number is only a reference.

The new sensors have improvements to the tip:

Bosch universal interchange with "Posilock" connector

Old O2 sensors compared to new--new on the bottom--old on the left---old but new replacement on the right:

At 45K you should be OK by the book. Only a visual check will confirm.

John

Hmm, if I passed smog though, wouldn't my O2 sensor have to be okay? I too sometimes get a gasoline smell over 3,500 RPM

I replaced my O2 sensor over the summer and it made a huge difference. My stumble off idle was gone and in general the car runs better.

Hi Tom,

My car has 87K on the odometer, and since the O2 sensor was fused on with rust I assume it was original.

Gawernator - Based on my research I believe you can have a bad O2 sensor and still pass emissions so don't trust smog, as John said pull it (easy or very difficult depending on rust) and check it. Clark's Garage has a good article on testing.

John, thanks for all the information. I'll take a look at it next summer. Getting ready to put it away for the winter now. I can't believe it snowed yesterday while I was raking leaves!
