How far off will alignment be after lowering?
So i just noticed that both inside edges of my front tires are wearing. So i need an alignment. I am on stock suspension, but i have weltmeister 250s for the front and 28mm t-bars for the rear, i havent installed because i didnt want to get an alignment yet. well - now i need one anyways, so why the heck not right? =p
my shop where i do work is 50 miles from home, and 70 miles from marque motors where id probably go. when i lowered my g20 i never had it aligned and i never had a problem with alignment being off - different car different setup. my question is - with WM 250s, and an even drop in the back (not much more than its at already with the eccentric lowered), how off will the alignment really be? with inside edge wear, does that mean toe out? lowering should push the toe out even more shouldnt it? im just wondering how shaky it will be on the freeway from the shop to the alignment shop. before anyone says anything - i have inspected tie rod ends and ball joints, and those arent the issue. thanks!

You'll probably find that the Welts will raise your car at the front rather than lower it as your current stock set-up is most likely worn and lower than stock height anyway. It's also most likely that your camber is out though it could be toe, or both.
Swap those welts in, adjust rear eccentric to match the new front height, then get an alignment. You don't want the car with a rear rake, either level or slight rake to the front. Before you adjust the rear drive around for 5mins to "settle" the new front springs. |

if the toe doesnt get thrown off a ton more than now, which it sounds like it wont, i will do the front, and then the rears the next day - because it will require reindexing repeatedly.
my car has 230k on it, and the suspension feels great. i have maintenance records but no record of new shocks. i am betting its been done though. my springs may sag some though. i sit lower than other 944s, but they arent blown, so thats my guess. it may sit about where it is after lowering in the end. youre right. this is before the rear was dropped about .5" : ![]()

If the inside edges of the tires are showing wear then it sounds like negative camber rather than toe. You can check camber with a digital level and a level surface to park the car on. The camber adjustment on the front is an eccentric bolt on the bottom of the strut housings. Toe can be checked with two tape measures, homemade toe plates and adjusted with the tie-rods.
Changing the front springs is not hard. The torsion bars are a PITA.

yeah i know the t bars are going to be a pain. the VW type 3 has plugs for that reason - like some people cut holes to slide them in and out. ive considered finding a set and cutting holes to fit them into. but im pretty short on money and i may just sell the suspension to pay for the alignment =(

When I raised my back end to stock height it was very squirrely. Had to take it on the longest bridge in the world to the Porsche specialty shop that had the right tools/know how to get it aligned, 24 miles of open water to New Orleans without shoulders, just 7 crossovers. Once it was aligned though it was a dream. All that money and a 2 hour wait was worth it.

it doesn't take much in ride height change to really mess things up. when i first dropped the blue car 3/4" it added a half degree negative camber all around, and really buggered the toe up front. all bushings were fresh and tight.
