Which Mods to use with new Web Cam?
Hi all,
I am new to the 944 scene and I am looking for some suggestions. I just ordered a camshaft from Web Cam mn#05-121, and I am curious as to which specific manufacturer's "chip" may work better as a combination with this specific grind and a cone type air filter? For now, I am leaning towards one from a local supplier...any suggestions or am I simply over-analyzing the project? BTW, its for a '86 944 n/a Thanks in advance Bob |

COLDBASS,
FRWILK, who posts on this board, can probably fix you up something. He has a web site. Did a quick search for Web Cam's site to get info on cam & didn't find it. I would guess that with more duration, you would want to bump the spark timing up a couple of degrees. I would do searches on this board concerning headers & cone type filters. Arnebret did a post in the last couple of weeks concerning underhood air temp. I once saw a racer who fabbed a duct for his cone filter to pick up air from the stock place in the fenderwell. One of those injector things from Racer Parts Wholesale will let you test your injector duty cycle & O2 sensor to see if maybe you need bigger injectors or cheaper, an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. I think the turbo valve springs are a little stiffer, so if your cam is kind of a wild grind, you may want them. drew1 |

Drew1,
Thanks for the reply. I did even think about larger injectors or fuel pressure regulator...I did search the archieves on cone filters but I could not determine a general consensus from all the postings. I feel than one challenge will be to fabricate a "snorkle" for the cone air filter in an effort to locate it to the front of the engine compartment. I was hoping to develope a "proto" using someone suggestion of Home Depot ABS/PVC, then simply having a stainless version fabricated... Yes, Web Cam lost their domain a few months ago and it took a bit of time before I could locate their new site: http://www.webcamshafts.com/ I was actually planning on contacting FRWILK offline to review my options. I was just searching for additional suggestions such as what you have provided. Thanks, Bob |

Another thing you should consider, in addition to new valve springs, is new followers...A new cam should always have new followers...At least that is what I have read and what I have been told...
Didn't you, or still do you have, an early 924...I love those cars...They are nothing but fun... ![]() |

Mike,
Thanks for the info. Web Cam indicated that stock lifters should be fine. Although, I like the suggestion about using turbo springs. Early 924, no...actually, I just completed my 923/912E engine/motor rebuild project last week. I am very satisfied with the performance and now its time to start the 944 project. Once the 944 is finished, then it is on to an early '70s 911 project. A 951 or S2 may have been a better choice, however this deal came along at the right price and in the color I had wanted...so... One thing that I will probably change is that I have 16 x 8 on all four corners...I prefer 16 x 7 up front... Thanks for your help... Bob |

Bob,
I think Mike mentioned the new cam followers because old ones can eat up a new cam during break in. Let us know what you find out. drew1 |

Drew1,
Yes, at a minimum I will have new stock followers installed. I will also have some mild P and P performed on the cylinder head. I will certainly update everyone as the project progresses, I initially anticipated completion by the end of July, however, labor day seems to be a more realistic target date for completion. Web Cam contacted me on Friday and inidcated that the new cam is ready...I will be picking 'er up on Monday or Tuesday of next week. Thanks again to you and Mike B ... Bob ![]() |

Mike B,
Geez, how true...The vehicle was on the lift on Monday when I visited "her"...front end was "massaged" over the weekend. "Hmmm, looks like the old gal (no offense intended to the female Pelicanhead population) can use some new shocks, rubber, exhaust, + a new sound system..." I said...LOL I can already feel the projected completion date slipping again... Keep ya posted... Thanks again, Bob |
