Have a late 944 restoration ongoing... I found the drivers side door is loose when I use the key, but if I slightly angle the key I can get it to open. 25+ years takes a lot of a lock, cylinder and the mechanics. I believe I can move the passenger side to the drivers and do a clean swap. But I am still only buying some time before the good one goes. Usually happening at the worst time. I searched and have found little on the subject. Does any GPO have a few small hints/ideas to assist in this? I doubt I am the only one facing this problem.
I would really like to keep the keys and refurbish the cylinders. A new lock set is somewhat out of my price range.

Hi Porsche37, being in Europe you are a lot closer than most Forum members!
Anyway, yes you can do a straight swap of the worn drivers side lock across to the passenger side, You can also re-build a lock cylinder if you are really careful to remove the tumbler slides from an unworn cylinder and replace them (in order) with the tumbler slide set from your lock. You can usually get a late passenger side that would do the job from a porsche breaker. That way you can keep your original keys. I would then recommend fitting a remote control central locking unit. I have done this and it works a treat. You dont have to use the key in the lock then, and that saves wear and tear!

A locksmith can rebuild your cylinders to match the existing key but then your locks will be new and the old keys might not want to work.

I had my ignition, both doors and the hatch rekeyed for $100, I bought two new porsche keys and had those cut by the same locksmith to match the rebuilt cylinders.

Some jobs are best left to the experts, I think this is one of them.

I recommend you replace any plastic linkage in the doors if you pull the locks out.

Great thoughts, thanks for the response. I will check if there is a good locksmith that can get this done. I already learned some lessons recovering the dash... Yes Bruce, some jobs are left to the experts!
