It wasn't any 5K though. |

There's absolutely no way that 3,000 RPM in 4th is going to be 115. |
Mea culpa!
I watched the video and yeah it looked like 115 was close to 5k. I guess I'll go shoot myself. Oops, wait. I already did that! |

Sorry to stick my nose in, but, these engines are bullet proof. If you have good timing belts, running 4,000 to 5,500 rpm all day won' hurt them at all. Oil temp is a factor (viscosity breakdown)so an external oil cooler is a must. Oil starvation is no issue unless you are doing long hi G right turns, then the oil pick up tube gets exposed and #2 bearing goes. Track guys run an extra 1/2 quart of oil to help with this issue.

Not sure what to make of all this driving like a senior citizen. These cars were made to be driven!
My '88 924S will exceed 60 MPH in 3rd gear if I'm accelerating toward 4th. On the other hand, it will lug and drag its feet at every missed downshift. I actually feel guilty driving it that far below the power band. My car has CASIS, and that light definitely doesn't come on until the upper end of the rev range if I'm driving the car properly. If it comes on around 2k I know I've been driving in too high a gear. The best thing about an NA is that you can use all of the acceleration in lower gears without actually breaking the speed limit or being a reckless driver. These care are some of the most fun you can have below the legal speed limlt. Also, if you're rolling at 2k in a high gear you have fewer options when the idiot next to you makes a mistake. If you're in the power band in a lower gear you can accelerate out of or around trouble. I do envy your 5th gear cruising though. I've got the track-oriented short 5th gear that came in these 924S trannies, so at 80-85mph on the interstate I'm turning around 4-4.5k. It can be fun until you pay the gas man. ;) Add in the '88 only high compression ratio, and it only gets worse when you start pumping premium. Lucky for me 99% of my driving is city driving. |
Speaking of shift points:
For the early cars, I came across this(as always i'm sure you all have read this and now it already) in the 1983 drivers manual(which I just read for the first time from cover to cover.... so , be nice bc i'm just throwing some info out there that some of us newbies may not have seen just yet.) Quote: For smooth shifting, observe the following shift points (applies to standard gear ratios only) 5th to 4th gear 5000 rpm 4th to 3rd gear 4750 rpm 3rd to 2nd gear 4500 rpm 2nd to 1st gear 3850 rpm End quote Maybe in 1984 I would feel comfortable down shifting at these #'s, but now.......mmmm nope. down shifting at 5k would make my seat upholstery be sucked up into nether regions of my body! Gaw,
Did you figure out the issue? I had injector #1 leak worse after I replaced the seals/o-rings so I just replaced the injector. I haven't had a problem since. As for the shifting discussion, I've noticed that sometimes these threads run out to left field (I know I've been guilty of steering a discussing to BSville). But while we're here: I will shift very lightly when she's cold until operating temp is reached. As some of the previous posts stated, these cars need to run up a bit to stay healthy. I will usually shift around 3K but will raise up another 1-1.5k when on the highway. I must admit that I've never taken above 5k mainly because, like you, I want to preserve her for as long as possible. Besides, I enjoy eating up miles at a rapid pace on the highway than screaming down a secondary road. Maybe I should have bought a 928... Oh well, another discussion. |
3k shifting is into the spirited driving range for me. It all depends on your throttle use, altitude, load etc. I ended up replacing all four injectors. What happens is the injector starts leaking internal basically at the tip joint part thing. With the new injectors(GB manufacturing) and the VR1 oil my car feels like a new car almost. It's crazy. 950 idle no vibration almost.
|
Sounds like you may have a hairline crack on either the pintle cap (the yellow plastic piece) or the actual metal tip. Just for giggles, try swapping out with another injector and see what happens. If the same injector leaks at the new location then swap out pintle caps and see if the leak follows. Good luck!
BTW: I still have this bloody intermittent low idle issue however, not all the time. It's has to be something dumb as I haven't adjusted anything and there are times when she runs perfect. |
Clean out your ICV fixed my idle surge. And I'm not gonna fuch with that damn fuel rail anytime soon haha. The injector is done for.

My 2.7 pulls like a tractor but I don't nanna drive it @ low rev's ,best way to trash a motor IMO. |

That's not saying you need to thrash it, rather, a rev range is there to be explored! Lugging it around loads the engine in ways it was not designed for. Let the car warm up and then drive it. Cheers Greg In the wonderful land of Oz |
I don't lug the engine, obviously if I'm accelerating faster than regular conservative economical driving, higher RPM's. or uphill, etc. flat normal driving you can easy shift around 2.1k and not lug. When it lugs you hear the engine protest and groan and the car shakes, to varying degrees depending on how bad the strain is
