Why is the rear shock absorber not flush up against the bolt? Is this right or is this another reason for me to hate my PO? I'm about to put konis on because these kybs suck!
Should I get new bolts? If so where can I find them?

The bolt IS tight against the shock. You are seeing a metal sleeve (it's part of the shock) around the bolt. The sleeve is longer than the end of the shock to allow for movement of the shock. Some shocks have longer sleeves than others.......

Ahhh ok that makes sense.
I was confused because I had seen others that were flat up against the bolt.

Why the rust if you're in CA?

Your axles are pretty rusty. Sway bar, trailing arm connection. Clean up those shock bolts, make sure the rest of them isn't rusty.

Replace that CV boot too. Otherwise your CV joint is going to be ruined (it may already be).

I'm from Michigan and got it shipped out here when I moved.

I meant more like what damage would it cause to my car

First it makes an annoying sound. Probably a clunking. Eventually it would destroy itself, because there is no grease in there (the boot holds the grease). Wouldn't cause any damage to the car except spray axle grease (pretty bad stuff - not something you want on your skin actually) everywhere which is gross.

You may be able to salvage the joint if it's recent.

If you're looking for new CV axles I'll be pulling a set off an 87 S that are in good condition one of these days...

:D I know what you meant. Just messing about, but actually what my statement is meant to imply is that nothing will go wrong other than the destruction of the joint, which would leave you stranded.... but it will be pretty noticeable by that point.

During previous ownership of my car, the boots exploded showering everything with grease. The PO replaced the CV joints, but never cleaned all the gunk. He proceeded to drive through gravel, and on country roads... etc .... Finally I got it all clean when I did the clutch. Some of the bolts were completely hidden by layers of muck....

Ahh that would not be good. No clunking sound that I've heard. Know any place to get cheap boots?

Well it has just been brought to my attention that I am looking for CV axles. haha One of these days might be a good idea because I'm fresh out of money at the moment. lol PM me with a price and we can go from there!

Ugh that sounds like a big mess. Hopefully I can avoid all that. What did you use to clean it?

10 bucks a boot.

Screwdriver and plastic scraper shaves off the big stuff, and Varsol with a little brush will clean the rest. Pretty time consuming, but worth doing. It makes maintenance easier, and the car will looks a lot less like an 80's beater.

Its not a CV axle. Its a CV joint on the end of the axle, actually 2 CV joints -- one on each end of the axle.

And if they actually BREAK, which they do sometimes, like when all the grease comes out because the boot fails, the end of the axle can flail around in there and break stuff...

Well there's no sign of grease splattered anywhere. Do you think I'd be fine with just replacing the boots?

If the boots aren't torn and the joint isn't making any noise, I wouldn't worry about it. Go fix something else.

The boot in the photo is cracked and destroyed and it looks as though it's been that way for a while. At a bare minimum I would pull the axle, clean, and repack the CV joint before putting on a new boot.

Pelican is all sold out of the boots. Would this be just as good?

Hi Mike..The ebay item looks fine to me, I would buy one. So, unless someone else has had a bad experience with that seller or item, I think you're pretty safe.

Have fun fitting them...and always wear disposable gloves when handling really greasy parts!! ;)
