Engine Install Starter Issue

Installed a motor in a street '86 944. When turning the key the starter does not engage. There is power to the starter and if I jump the power to trigger wire on the starter the engine fires.
Any ideas where the trigger or kill switch point is for the starter circuit?

Thanks

Sounds as if the ignition switch is bad.

It's an Auto and replaced the shifter. Is there a cutoff switch in there?

The shifter should have some switch contacts in the start circuit, they should be closed to complete the start circuit. They should be closed in the park or neutral positions only. There should be a provision to adjust the shifter for correct alignment to insure the switch is closed in the park position.

If you have a Haynes repair manual look in the Auto trans chapter for selector lever cable adjustment, it's on the first page of the chapter.
