Question Tach works but the MPG dial only moves intermittently

I've got a late 944 na 5 spd that has a working tachometer but the MPG dial sticks from time to time. When you pull up to a stop, it will generally kick on and start fluctuating. Use to happen once in a while. Now it is very common. Aren't they part of the same cluster? Why would one work but not the other.

So does mine. I haven't figured out what's causing it yet. Please let me know if you figure it out.

I just remembered that someone here said that it could be the gauge and that I should take the gauge out of the cluster and clean the connections. I think I did it? I can't remember now. But my gauge still doesn't work.

Mine jumps around about 5-10 MPG. Interesting red gauge surroundings. Looks cool.

Your cluster looks sweet! I'd say try cleaning the electrical insides

Took it out so many times working on odometer gremlins that I painted it red when I got ticked at it one day. Need to find a matching red shift boot cover.

Where did you get white needles? I'm sure Kyle/Greenwater could assist with your shift boot.. ^_^

I didn't even see the white needles. I like it. I will have to do that to mine next time I take it apart.

Two more things I just noticed. I don't remember seeing the VDO on my gauge surroundings.(middle bottom)

The second thing, what does it say on the bottom of the speedo?

Thanks Andrew, I was thinking the same thing. I CAN make you a red shifter cover. Check out the other covers we sell and let me know if you want a red cover. Shifter Covers Just PM me or email me. A red vinyl cover should be the same price as the black vinyl.($15)

I should start doing custom covers. It's easy enough and I've done them before. I will have to add that to the site. Thanks Andrew.

It is a VDO cluster. I think it came out of a 968 actually. I'd like to get a red leather shift cover. Classic9Leather use to sell them but I no longer see them on their website. That or black leather with some sort of red leather stitching. I thik they use to sell them for $45. I'd pay that.

Oh yeah it says WOW! Those are stickers but you sure cannot tell. I had other really bad ideas but didn't do them. Like at 88 mpg I was going to put B2TF for Back to the Future. At 100 I was going to put JAIL.

Odd...replacing the starter seems to have cured the stuck mpg needle.

The earlier cars have a mpg gauge, my 85.5 does, but my 87 doesn't.

I probably have a bad ground somewhere too, but my starter works fine.

Manual - 86 has one. That is a late model. Automatics of course do not.
